Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch’s News Corp sent a journalist and Ofir Birenbaum, who claims to be Jewish, to cafe Cairo Takeaway in Sydney to incite trouble so News Corp could run stories about Australia having an antisemitism problem.
Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch have a long history of promoting hate because that is a key part of their business model and as it turns out Ofir Birenbaum also has history of trying to incite trouble with Palestinian supporters using the Star of David symbol which is a six-pointed star that represents Jewish identity and religious beliefs.
Cairo Takeaway incitement attempt
Ofir Birenbaum went into the Cairo Takeaway wearing a cap and a pendant with the Star of David on them with a News Corp crew from Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph waiting outside.
Crikey reported on Friday (14/2/25)
A News Corp operation sending an “undercover Jewish man” to a popular Egyptian cafe this week backfired when staff called the police following an altercation with Daily Telegraph journalists.
Internal files seen by Crikey show the outlet planned to use covert video-recording eyewear in the making of the story, which it internally named “UNDERCOVERJEW” and sketched out a week in advance.
Earlier this week, the head chef at Cairo Takeaway in Newtown, Sydney, posted footage to social media of an argument between Cairo staff and a News Corp journalist, videographer and the undercover individual after they had left the cafe.
Notes made in The Daily Telegraph’s internal planning system give insight into how journalists planned the story. They detail an aim of reporting “what it’s like being Jewish in Sydney”, secretly filming with video glasses, and identify the undercover Jewish man as Ofir Birenbaum — an individual described as a “friend” by fringe group the Australian Jewish Association (AJA). The system notes also outline The Daily Telegraph’s intention to send Birenbaum into various neighbourhoods to film people’s reactions. (Click here to read more)
The News Corp crew included The Daily Telegraph reporter Danielle Gusmaroli, video producer Jeremy Span and photographer Rohan Kelly.
I published the below video (15/2/25) which has video of the incident at the Cairo Takeaway and also a video of Ofir Birenbaum talking about being in the Israel Defence Force and denying Israel has committed genocide in Gaza.
Cairo Takeaway posted about the matter on their Instagram account and said:
‘Yesterday, just after opening our restaurant at midday, a white male came in and ordered a hibiscus tea, with no fuss, whatsoever,’ the post stated.
‘After receiving the tea the ordered, he lingered in the restaurant and remained standing near the counter.
‘At this point, the server asked if there was anything else he wanted. He replied: “Do you have a problem with me because I’m Jewish?”‘
The post stated the staff member was ‘shocked and completely taken aback’ by the question.
When the server said, ‘Excuse me?’, Mr Birenbaum said, ‘You’re intimidating me, you’re making me feel unsafe’, the post continued.
The post stated the staff member ‘tried to disengage by walking outside’, but was confronted by the Telegraph team ‘waiting in ambush’.
‘Birenbaum then came in very close while sipping on his tea and said words to the effect of: “You Arabs make good tea”,’ the post stated.
Ofir Birenbaum is also alleged to have said to the staff member, “I hope your restaurant gets blown up”. (Click here to see on Cairo Takeaway’s Instagram account)
Ofir Birenbaum’s history of inciting Palestinian supporters using an Israeli flag
The Jerusalem Post reported on the 9th of December 2024:
An Australian Jewish man detained outside a Sydney synagogue for waving an Israeli flag at pro-Palestinian protesters decried policing double standards that ignored anti-Israel activists.
Ofir Birenbaum and his wife had arrived at the Sydney Great Synagogue on Wednesday to attend the Technion 100 Years Grand Event and, before entering, waved an Israeli flag at the Stop the War on Palestine protest across the street.
Birenbaum was not only met with cries from anti-Israel protesters calling him a “murderer” but was immediately approached by a visibly angry police commander who castigated the Jewish community member for antagonizing the demonstrators.
“You’re just antagonizing them; [there is] no need to be here,” said the officer in a video recorded by Birenbaum. “You’re just coming here to cause drama.” (Click here to read more)
Below is a video of the incident that Ofir Birenbaum recorded himself.
For Ofir Birenbaum to record and publish the above video of him harassing Palestinian supporters last year destroys his credibility and the lies he is now telling regarding what he did at the Cairo Takeaway.
Ofir Birenbaum has made defamation threats against Cairo Takeaway owner
Ofir Birenbaum hired defamation lawyer Rebekah Giles to threaten the owner of the Cairo Takeaway with a defamation lawsuit if he didn’t take down his Instagram post and she demanded an apology to Ofir Birenbaum.
At the time of writing this article, the Instagram post is still up so the owner of the Cairo Takeaway is standing his ground.
For some background, I wrote an article about Rebekah Giles in March 2021 titled “Christian Porter’s lawyer, Rebekah Giles, said to her ex “You and (the woman) will be very happy as long as you keep your Viagra script current, keep flashing your cash and keep the cocaine coming” (Click here to read the article)
There is no chance Ofir Birenbaum will follow through with defamation threats because he would lose and lose badly given his history of incitement which he himself recorded and had published as per the above video with the police chasing him down the street.
In any defamation case Ofir Birenbaum would have to explain what he was doing inside the Egyptian café with a star of David hat, why he was with The Daily Telegraph journalist and why were they waiting outside etc.
I saw on Channel 10 News (15/2/25) that Ofir Birenbaum had given them video on the Cairo Takeaway incident from his phone to prove his innocence.
But for any defamation case Ofir Birenbaum would also have to hand over the video from his “covert video-recording eyewear” which would likely tell the real story.
As it turns out The Daily Telegraph have thrown Ofir Birenbaum’s defamation claim under a bus by publicly saying they could have “handled the situation better” as per the first video above.
News Corp would never allow the matter to go to court as they would be humiliated globally and they’ve had enough of that in recent years so they wont want more.
