Liberal Party leader Sussan Ley’s expenses fraud! And is she worse than Peter Dutton?

Newly appointed, Gina Rinehart sponsored, Liberal Party leader Sussan Ley was fraudulently claiming travel expenses for years before she was caught and resigned to avoid scrutiny.

And in February 2024 Sussan Ley posted on Twitter,

“If you live in Frankston and you’ve got a problem with Victorian women being assaulted by foreign criminals, vote against Labor. If you do not want to see Australian women being assaulted by foreign criminals, vote against Labor. Send Labor a message.”

Sussan Ley’s Tweet by itself raises the question is Ley worse than Peter Dutton?

Let’s deal with Ley’s expenses fraud first.

Sussan Ley’s fraud is worth looking at because while politicians on all sides have been caught making fraudulent expenses claims this is the first time that I can recall someone being appointed leader of their party, which makes Ley the alternative Prime Minister, after being exposed for such blatant fraud.

Sussan Ley resigns as Minister for Health on the 13th of January 2017

Ley’s Wikipedia profile says,

In January 2017, an examination of Ley’s expenditure claims and travel entitlements revealed she had purchased an apartment on the Gold Coast, close to the business premises of her partner, for $795,000 while on official business in Queensland.

Ley defended the purchase, saying her work in the Gold Coast was legitimate, that all travel had been within the rules for entitlements, and that the purchase of the apartment “was not planned nor anticipated” (a claim which was widely derided).

On 8 January 2017, Ley released a statement acknowledging that the purchase had changed the context of her travel and undertaking to repay the government for the cost of the trip in question as well as three others. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Ley had made 27 taxpayer-funded trips to the Gold Coast in recent years.

“On 9 January 2017, Ley announced that she would stand aside from her ministerial portfolios until an investigation into her travel expenses was completed by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet. She announced that she would not be making her diaries public.

On 13 January 2017, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that Ley had resigned from the ministry. (Click here to read more)

Sussan Ley’s Wikipedia page leaves out a lot of details of the fraud, so let’s look at a couple of articles from 2017.

On Friday the 5th of January 2017 the ABC published an article titled: “Sussan Ley defends purchase of $800k unit on taxpayer-funded trip to Gold Coast” which starts off:

An impulse purchase is how Health Minister Sussan Ley is explaining her decision to buy an apartment during a taxpayer-funded trip to the Gold Coast in 2015.

Ms Ley is under pressure from the Opposition over the property she purchased in May 2015 while travelling to Queensland on ministerial business, accompanied by her partner — whose expenses were also covered by the taxpayer.

A spokesperson for Ms Ley said the purchase of the almost $800,000 property “was not planned nor anticipated”. (Click here to read more)

On Sunday the 8th of January 2017 the ABC published an article titled: “Sussan Ley agrees to partly pay back cost of trips to Gold Coast after apartment purchase” which starts off:

Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley has agreed to partly pay back the cost of four trips to the Gold Coast where she and her partner own two properties.

There are unanswered questions about 14 other taxpayer-funded trips identified by the ABC, including two New Year’s Eve celebrations on the tourist strip.

and:

In a statement, Ms Ley apologised for the “error of judgement” and said it did “not meet the high standards” set by the Prime Minister.

“While attending an auction was not the reason for my visit to Queensland or the Gold Coast, I completely understand this changed the context of the travel undertaken,” she said.

and:

Ms Ley will also pay back two other accommodation claims on the Gold Coast and a flight.

and:

The ABC has analysed three years’ worth of the minister’s travel reports and found she travelled to the Gold Coast 20 times.

As the sun set on the final days of 2013, Ms Ley charged taxpayers $655 for her flight to the tourist strip for New Year’s Eve.

A year later, after another Gold Coast New Year’s Eve, she charged for her and her partner’s flights back to Sydney.

The most expensive flight was a $12,365 charter flight taken in March 2015.

The ABC put questions to Ms Ley’s office about 18 trips, worth $53,877.

She declined an interview, but her office issued a statement saying: “In her portfolio, she is required to undertake extensive meetings with doctors, patients and other organisations that are not media or public events.” (Click here to read more)

On Monday the 9th of January 2017 the SMH published an article titled: “Labor calls on Sussan Ley to explain property purchase while on taxpayer-funded trip” which starts off:

Health Minister Sussan Ley is facing fresh calls to resign after revelations she has taken 27 taxpayer-funded flights in and out of the Gold Coast over recent years, including over two consecutive years during the New Year’s Eve period.

Ms Ley has come under fire for purchasing an $800,000 apartment on a 2015 taxpayer-funded trip to the Gold Coast, where her partner owns a bin-cleaning business.

But government records show Ms Ley, who is based in Albury, has been a frequent visitor to the Gold Coast since 2013 and that she has made significantly more trips to the area than her non-Queensland frontbench colleagues.

Ms Ley used her taxpayer entitlements to spend 37 nights on the Gold Coast since 2013, including 15 nights in 2013, 11 nights in 2014, 10 in 2015 and one in the first half of 2016.

By contrast, Nationals Leader Barnaby Joyce has spent three nights on the Gold Coast over the same period and Communications Minister Mitch Fifield five nights.

and:

Among Ms Ley’s 27 flights to the Gold Coast was a flight on December 30, 2013, from Albury to Coolangatta via Sydney.

Ms Ley used a Cabcharge voucher that day before taking two taxpayer-funded taxis on New Year’s Eve.

The following year Ms Ley charged taxpayer for a flight from Coolangatta to Sydney on New Year’s Day as well as a flight for a family member.

Ms Ley did not charge taxpayers for accommodation over these periods. (Click here to read more)

There are a lot of unanswered questions Sussan Ley should have answered long ago but Ley certainly should answer now given her new position as Liberal Party leader, Coalition leader and as the current alternative Prime Minister.

News Corp to the rescue

News Corp propagandist Samantha Maiden has published an article (14/5/25) titled “How Sussan Ley’s career crashed, burned and was revived” which says:

When Sussan Ley resigned from the frontbench amid an ongoing expenses scandal nearly a decade ago, many thought her career was over.

She stepped aside amid two investigations into her travel expenses, including her decision to purchase a $795,000 luxury apartment on the Gold Coast.

She had used a taxpayer-funded COMCAR to scoot around the corner to check it out.

After she was forced to resign in 2017, it would be three long years until it was revealed in the book Party Animals that Bill Shorten’s ‘dirt unit’ secretly orchestrated her downfall by leaking a dossier of travel records to newspaper outlets to engineer a political crisis.

It would later emerge that the sole breach was using a COMCAR to take her from her hotel to the $800,000 apartment she bought, a five-minute journey.

Claims she broke the rules by visiting the Gold Coast on New Year’s Eve and piloting a plane were dismissed on the grounds she could prove official business on those days. (Click here to read more)

Maiden in effect blames the then Labor Party leader Bill Shorten’s dirt unit for Sussan Ley’s travel rorts and then says, “It would later emerge that the sole breach was using a COMCAR”.

Having a government department clear Sussan Ley has no credibility. Let them release all the details or Sussan Ley can release all the details.

I notice News Corp propagandist Samantha Maiden made no mention of Sussan Ley’s “27 taxpayer-funded flights” reported by the SMH or Sussan Ley’s “18 trips worth $53,877” reported by the ABC in her article.

Is Sussan Ley worse than Peter Dutton?

As a side note. On the 29th of February 2024 Sussan Ley posted the bellow message on Twitter and I posted the comment below that:

Sussan Ley article

I never did receive a response from Sussan Ley regarding my comment above.

Sussan Ley needs to deal with the above if she wants to put it behind her and move forward. Although, if she has plenty to hide, she won’t want to deal with it.

This article is a follow-up to my previous article “Liberal Party fraudsters Angus Taylor and Jacinta Price run for leadership” and Angus Taylor obviously missed out and the Liberal party chose Sussan Ley as leader.

If Sussan Ley lasts past this year as Coalition and Liberal Party leader she will be doing well. Not only does her own conduct undermine herself and her position as leader, but half the Liberal Party will be trying to undermine her.

  1. The Libs know they’ll lose the next election so Ley is minding the job They would never choose her if they had any chance at all next time

    • That’s true, but it’s not the whole story. The chances of her replacement being cut out of the same cardboard is running at around 96%. Like the people doing Trump’s dirty work for him and his backers, they want and need a narcissist at the helm so they can do their thing unobstructed by regulation and ethical demands. The sad thing is that Labor use the same song book. If they didn’t, they wouldn’t get elected. The real question is: why do Coalition Members rarely get taken to book for this sort of conduct in public office? We have a defective electorate, made that way by earlier generations of lack-lustre pollies. Only for KCA and one or two other blogs on Youtube, you’d swear Australian politics was just one big Disneyland. Maybe it is, and I’m the deluded one.

      • Its also a case of “WHY don’t Labor and other partiy pollies and like get taken to book” and other affiliated friends be called to legal account publicly!???

Look at Shanes’ KANGAROO Court LIST on the right hand side of his (this) website and those “culprits” listed are is just a miniscule of those that MUST be held to The Peoples account.

The list of Prime MInsters and government (The People) employees that have been well paid in office with their employers taxes, then on retirenment the party still continues with employment offers, Superannuation…. gold passes for some…..

HIgh time to get the Standards,. Values Morals, Ethics, Principles, Responsibility for ones actions back into society and the World in general.

A lot of people got worn out over the years as the “scum” rode to the top. Like a greastrap, that scum needs to be scraped off and out firmly broght to account,. and each individual needs to be involved in doing so to get AUstralia back on track.

  2. So now its Ms Ley and not Suss an Ley anymore? Either way we are always going to be Leyed too?
It really is testement to just how suspect the Australian media is. And how urgent it has always been for a full inquiry of what goes on in that media. The LNP/Media protection units spring into action defending their billionaire sponsored party ministers wrong doings and can actually blame the opposition leader Shorten for “Leaking information”, actually doing his job? While the LNP/Media hack covers up a litany of Liberal party ministerial deception. At least the SMH and ABC published some of these deceptions while the rest of the media, ignored it and ran the usual LNP/Media protection racket? Whats really rotten is how this media picks and chooses what we are permitted to see and hear and how really corrupted that is! Maybe the Labor Govt can’t hear us, perhaps we need to get a lot louder calling for action?
But looking at the massive win by Labor with this entire LNP/Media rabidly supporting the LNP, while relentlessly hammering Labor with contrived nonsenses, disinformation and lies, the Labor Govt may as usual, not think its worth the trouble of antagonising that corrupted LNP/Media even more?
Labor should remember that corrupted media still managed to get over 5 million people to vote for the Dutton/Hanson/Family First coalition with no real policy, no real direction, in the worst most incompetent LNP election result in its history? Imagine how bad that result would have been, without the billionaire cartel bankrolling those wall to wall LNP/Media protection units?
Ley, Taylor and many other LNP politicians wouldn’t even be there, they probably would have been forced to resign or even be prosecuted like the other party’s are ?

    • Could the former LNP party at last have learned how the ALP operated over at least the past 25 years? Divide and conquer.
The current apparent squabbling by the Nationals and Liberals may be a smokescreen. Ms Ley’s past corruption is irrelevant currently. The Nationals have not lost much ground on their home turf. They will be entitled to form a valid opposition to the ALP. That brings parliamentary recognition and status. The Greens are leaderless and a spent force. The Liberals under whoever accepts the poisoned chalice of “leadership” have 3 years to reform, rethink and regroup. Whoever leads them now almost certainly will not lead them after the next election. The ALP hit squads will see to that.
The next Federal election could well see a hopeless ALP, hoist by its own petard of power shortages, and monumental debt, facing a dedicated revisionary National Party opposition swapping preferences with former Liberals in key seats.

  3. This just shows me how desperate the Libs are, appointing a new leader who owns a cupboard chockablock full of skeletons.

  4. Wish she would get a haircut ! Her Gold Coast unit and jaunts and future travel deceptions might just give her that haircut ! Sad that is the best the Libs can come up with. Angus and the water licences to family with buybacks is even more odious.

  5. What a rotten species these politicians are and the poor punter takes the blows. Just when you think it couldn’t get worse it does. Your endurance Shane in exposing their mendacity is beyond admirable and all credit to you.

  6. $us$san LeyZee claimed:

$1,796,969.00 for Travel, Cars, Telecommunications & Office Expenses between
01 July 2013 and 30 June 2015 (two years) while also claiming
the salary for being Member for Farrer

Some may say ”Behind that vacant smile lurks a money gouging mainframe brain”.

  7. A Back Story:
IMHO, shadow defence minister Andrew Hastie says he has a “desire to lead” the Liberal Party – just one day after ruling himself out of the leadership race. His reasons? A young family and the long Perth–Canberra commute.

At first glance, this sounds reasonable. But a closer look reveals contradictions. Hastie’s children are aged 3, 7, and 9 – clearly a young family. Yet if that’s his benchmark, he’s effectively sidelining himself for at least nine more years. What happens then? Are the teenage years – arguably more critical in fatherhood – suddenly less important?

If family is the reason to step back, it should remain so, not shift when ambition resurfaces.

Then there’s the commute. Every WA federal MP faces the same distance. If it’s too great a burden, why hold a federal seat at all? Unless he plans to abandon Canning and find an eastern states electorate, this excuse rings hollow.

This pattern isn’t new. Hastie has long preferred ideological positioning to leadership responsibility. He speaks often of battles – cultural, moral, strategic – but when it comes to the battle that truly matters for a floundering party, he fades into the underbrush.

Andrew Hastie’s behaviour resembles the soldier in a ghillie suit – concealed, observant, taking photo opportunities, launching attacks from the sidelines but avoiding direct exposure.

Leadership, however, demands more than sniping commentary. It requires stepping forward when needed most.

If Andrew Hastie truly wants to lead, he must first stop hiding behind excuses. Because in its current state, the Liberal Party doesn’t need another cautious tactician – it needs someone willing to lead from the front.

Andrew Hastie is the soldier in permanent reconnaissance mode – always surveying the field, never seizing the objective – all talk of battle, but never first over the trench.

  8. Andrew Hastie posters are never removed from some of the fences on propertys in the town of Waroona WA Canning electorate and remain there until the next State election and Federal elections.
Maybe I should dob him into the WA Electral Commission.
