Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his government have been exposed for an abuse of power and humiliated with ATO whistleblower Richard Boyle’s sentence of a 12-month good behaviour bond, with no conviction recorded, after initially hitting Boyle with 66 charges.
The ABC reported (28/8/25):
In early 2019, Mr Boyle was charged with 66 offences and faced the theoretical possibility of up to 161 years in prison.
Over time, the number of charges were whittled down, initially to 24 charges, before he reached a plea deal with prosecutors, and in May, he pleaded guilty to four offences.
He had tried to invoke whistleblower protections to avoid a criminal trial, an effort backed by legal experts and human rights advocates.
Mr Boyle’s case was the first test of the Public Interest Disclosure Act (2013).
Along the way, both the District Court, and later the Court of Appeal ruled he did not have immunity from prosecution.
His last hope had been an appeal to the High Court, but his bid for special leave to appeal was refused. (Click here to read more)
The sentence is about as lenient as it could get and is in effect the judge saying “Why have you wasted the court’s time with the case”.
There are people who get more serious sentences for traffic offences.
So, how does the Albanese government justify spending over 7 years, 3 1/2 years while Albanese was in office, and $millions chasing whistleblower Richard Boyle. They can’t.
Boyle’s persecution also exposes Albanese’s big lie of caring about whistleblowers
Richard Boyle’s case is proof that the Anthony Albanese government hates whistleblowers as much as the Scott Morrison government did.
Richard Boyle’s matter dragged on for over 7 years and shows Scott Morrison and Anthony Albanese had, and still have, the same frivolous and vexatious goal to intimidate all whistleblowers. And the court judgment showed it was nothing more than a massive abuse of government authority and resources.
Richard Doyle generated a lot of publicity embarrassing the government, but even that didn’t stop the Albanese government.
The Albanese government were prepared to wear the bad publicity for what they saw as the greater benefit, which was the publicity of Boyle’s case intimidating other potential whistleblowers to stay silent, and not to blow the whistle, otherwise they would cop the same treatment as Boyle.
Below is a 7.30 Report story from September 2023 titled “Wife of ATO whistleblower says there’s ‘no end in sight’ to their prosecution ‘nightmare'” which gives a good overview of the story:
Anthony Albanese’s smoke and mirrors whistleblower protection
Richard Boyle was sentenced on the 28th of August, and the government waited until the week after, the 3rd of September 2025 to announce whistleblower reforms as per the below media release:
The Hon Michelle Rowland MP
3 September 2025
Media Release
The Albanese Government is delivering on our commitment to implement comprehensive reforms to Australia’s public sector whistleblowing framework, with public consultation on a second stage of reforms to the Public Interest Disclosure Act 2013 (the PID Act) to commence next week.
These vital consultations will support the Albanese Government to introduce a package of reforms by the end of the year that will improve the accessibility, operation and administration of the PID Act.
The Government’s reforms will be designed to clarify and strengthen protections for whistleblowers, simplify the procedures for making and handling public interest disclosures, and strengthen scrutiny and oversight of the system.
In addition, the Government proposes to establish a new Whistleblower Ombudsman within the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman, which would be the most significant addition to the federal integrity landscape since the establishment of the National Anti-Corruption Commission.
The Whistleblower Ombudsman would provide strong oversight of the PID Act to ensure disclosures are being made and responded to appropriately. The Ombudsman would also have new dispute resolution functions and the power to investigate reprisals.
These reforms will build on the significant improvements implemented in 2023 through the first stage of public sector whistleblowing reforms and provide a comprehensive response to the 2016 Review of the PID Act by Mr Philip Moss AM.
Quotes attributable to the Attorney-General, Hon Michelle Rowland MP:
“The Government’s proposed reforms to Australia’s public sector whistleblower framework demonstrate our ongoing commitment to integrity and transparency.
“A robust public sector whistleblower framework that is effective and easy to navigate is essential for trust in government.
“Through the establishment of a Whistleblower Ombudsman, we’re working to ensure disclosures are handled fairly and thoroughly, giving whistleblowers the confidence that their concerns will be taken seriously and addressed promptly.” (Click here to see the statement on the A-G’s website)
The above media release by the attorney-general Michelle Rowland is a total lie and she knows it and everyone in Canberra knows it. It is a puff piece media release by a government that has had 3 and 1/2 years to pass legitimate laws to protect whistleblowers. But they chose not to because they are scared of whistleblowers shining a light on their corruption.
The problem for Albanese is if another whistleblower exposes government corruption, and the Albanese government haven’t passed legislation to protect them, how does Albanese explain why after 3 1/2 years they haven’t done anything to protect whistleblowers.
The Duopoly and/or UniParty
Richard Boyle’s case exposes the joint policy of the federal Coalition (Liberal / National Parties) and the Labor Party showing them working together as a duopoly / UniParty to silence and destroy whistleblowers to cover-up government corruption.
Richard Boyle walks away a winner
Richard Boyle has generated tons of publicity on how bad the governments, whether Labor or the Liberal/National Coalition, treat whistleblowers and they do that because they want to hide their corruption.
Not many have been able to shine a light on government corruption to the same degree Richard Boyle has and the public should be grateful for his actions.
The positive impact of Richard Boyle’s actions will last years, if not decades. Richard and his wife should be proud.

That media release by Rowland says it all. Mr Boyle should have been rewarded and awarded as a champion of the people, not victimised. Oh well, what else can we expect as the 51st state of America. Lower case intended.
Jim R
Richard Boyle was lucky his case was heard in Adelaide by a sympathetic judge. Who knows how it would have ended had he been up before a “corrupt” judge.
In Canberra he would have joined David McBride in gaol.
Anyone know how effective the OCO (Office of Commonwealth Ombudsman) has been? Or is it another knackered NACC? All the pomp and ceremony that seems to go with setting up these paper tigers seems to take millions and produces pennies/cents worth of results after a length of time. Oh, well, the WBO will provide an income for a passel of lawyers who aren`t dipping into the gravy train in the Courts system.
I have also published a video of the above article on the Kangaroo Court of Australia YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/BTHlyImOgAQ
Thank goodness. I’m so happy for Richard Boyle that a judge saw the truth.
Poor Mr Boyle has been through enough terrorisation by Labor.
I send him love and peace and may his life from now be wonderful.
I’d like to know who Albanese is getting his directions from- because he’s not making any sense at all.
Thank goodness Extraterrestrials
will soon be arriving to save our beautiful plsnet.
We all need to meditate and pray for peace and love in the world- enough of us do that we can really stop wars and hate and live in peace for our children’s sakes.
Amen .
Richard Boyle Australian of the decade.
What a brave and selfless individual Richard Boyle is
Thank you to Richard Boyle & his long suffering family. We now definitely know what the Labor government stands for, themselves. Such a disappointment. No more votes
I find any government that punishes honest true public servants for questioning the legality and exposing the truth of the actions of that government totally abhorrent. Governments and government departments need to remember that their duty is to serve the citizens of Australia, not corporations, the wealthy and self interest. Time for corruption to be exposed and some harsh consequences.
What a decent human being and how courageous. I have no words for this government or any other that may be voted in the future.
Thankyou Richard Boyle and your beautiful wife!
What a price you have paid for Truth and what an example of courage you have demonstrated.
Sincere best wishes to you both
I have no idea how “Australian Citizen Of the Year” is voted for but if Mr Richard Boyle could be nominated it would show all governments how the people of Australia respect whistleblowers ?
Needless to say, absolutely nobody has been penalised for acting against Australian citizens, while in the employ of those citizens. Message to the people from our government: We’re not here for you, we’re here for ourselves, our mates and donors. You come last.
You used to be punished by the Courts if you failed to report a crime. Looks like the law has been reversed and you are in trouble now if you do so.
A really sustained malicious prosecution. BTW the victim of Constable Kenealley’s false statement has been awarded $456 k for mal pros.
As soon as Alboweasy said that he had witnessed no political corruption in all the years he’s been in parliament, I knew he was corrupt and weak!
This is absolutely BS. Whatever happened to free speech. If there is any part of the government not doing the right thing by it’s people they should be pulled into line and the full force of the law taken against that department. We all know the taxation office if a corporate entity and most people should not have to pay tax. Never mind will all collapse very very soon.
