Fake news set to explode at the Federal Election because of AI says Senator David Pocock

Fake news has been around at election time for decades, if not centuries, but Senator David Pocock makes a valid point that improvements in Artificial intelligence (AI) will take fake news at the next election to a new level.

Let’s look at what Senator David Pocock has said and his video and then we’ll use opposition leader Peter Dutton and Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus as examples and show the fake news and lies they are spreading now which would be at least in part in preparation for the next election which is due by May 2025.

Senator David Pocock posted the below video of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declaring a full ban on gambling advertising that will be phased in over 3 years.

But the video, as below, is a fake which Senator David Pocock had made with Artificial intelligence (AI) to prove a point.

If you don’t watch the video closely you would think it was real and even if you do watch closely, it is hard to pick that it is a fake. (Click anywhere on the below video to watch)

The above video of Senator David Pocock is from his Twitter account and was published on the 7th of September 2024. (Click here to see on Senator Pocock’s Twitter account)

Senator David Pocock says there are currently no laws against making a video like it and there needs to be an urgency to ban it, so he has set up a petition which says:

Our democracy is under threat.

AI and Deepfakes are being used to spread misinformation and disinformation and mislead voters.

We’ve seen generative AI being used around the world to try and influence elections.

Australians should be able to decide how to vote on the basis of facts, not fakes.

Currently in Australia there are no laws against using AI in elections, or for that matter telling lies or spreading misinformation.

The Australian Electoral Commissioner has said “The AEC does not possess the legislative tools or internal technical capability to deter, detect or then adequately deal with false AI-generated content concerning the election process.”

We are calling on Minister Farrell to legislate a ban on the use of deepfakes in elections before the next federal election. (Click here to go to the petition)

Opposition leader Peter Dutton and Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus spreading fake news

Peter Dutton

At the 2019 federal election people were handing out fake how to vote cards that benefited Peter Dutton as per the below video:

Would people who hand out fake how to vote cards, which is illegal, produce fake videos at election time which is not illegal as it currently stands? Of course they would, and if the law is not changed, we will be flooded with fake videos more and more into the future.

On the 24th of June 2024 I published an article titled “Peter Dutton colludes with greedy billionaire coal and gas miner Gina Rinehart for the fake “Nuclear policy” scam” which starts off:

Peter Dutton’s nuclear plant announcement is a fake and fraud being orchestrated by greedy billionaires Gina Rinehart and Rupert Murdoch with their fingerprints all over it and has nothing to do with cheaper power prices for the public.

Peter Dutton’s fake “nuclear policy” is about making sure greedy billionaire Gina Rinehart makes as much money as she can from her mining assets by slowing down the transition to renewable energy and she has the support of Rupert Murdoch and others. (Click here to read more)

Can we expect fake videos on the fake nuclear plant debate before the federal election? Almost certainly.

The Guardian reported in March 2024: “Peter Dutton says truth in political advertising ‘probably welcome’ but criticises Labor as scare campaign ‘experts’”

Peter Dutton has said that truth in political advertising is “probably welcome”, signalling a shift that could see the opposition support a Labor push for new laws to safeguard elections.

The special minister of state, Don Farrell, is expected to introduce legislation by mid-year to introduce caps on electoral spending and donations, and new powers for an independent regulator to enforce truth in political advertising.

Farrell first revealed the plans in July 2022, before an electoral matters inquiry in which the Liberal party resisted both caps and truth in advertising. The Liberals’ federal director, Andrew Hirst, had submitted that Labor lacked a mandate because it had not proposed the policies before the 2022 election.

The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, has met with crossbenchers, suggesting that the truth laws and caps could be legislated this term but not applied until after the next election. (Click here to read more)

What happened to the new laws the government promised?

Funny how Peter Dutton says truth in political advertising is “probably welcome”. Why does he only say, “probably welcome”?

Mark Dreyfus

Mark Dreyfus is big on pushing lies that he has helped protect whistleblowers while at the same time he has whistleblowers jailed, such as David McBride, and Dreyfus refuses to drop charges against ATO whistleblower Richard Boyle.

In relation to the below picture, former Senator Rex Patrick said on Twitter, “I can’t help but wonder what the man on the left would think about what the man on the right said last night.” (Click here to see on Twitter)Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC

It should be said that Peter Dutton and Mark Dreyfus are not the only politicians who lie, as most do. But Dutton and Dreyfus are next level liars who could have competed at the Olympics, if lying was a sport.

The point about Peter Dutton’s and Mark Dreyfus’ lies above is that they openly lie about anything and everything and if using AI for fake videos continues to be legal, they and their supporters, will not hesitate to use it at the next federal election and all elections after that.

There are 227 politicians in federal parliament and if only half of them and their supporters make fake videos we are in for a lot of fake videos at the election.

The government could have and should have passed laws to reduce fake news at elections but have failed to do so even though they have said they would.

Of course, if the government really wanted to do something about fake news they would start with Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp and the rest of Australia’s old media. Maybe that is why they are hesitant to do anything about fake news, because once they start, when and where do they stop.

So, beware of the increased fake news, especially AI generated videos and pictures, leading up to the federal election which is due by May 2025.

  1. One only has to look at the makeup and non-performance of the NACC to see how committed the LibLabs are to honesty and transparency.

  2. I support THE CROOKED BED Co. who make beds for politicians & others who cannot lie straight in bed. Maybe worth buying shares in this company. Chuckle, chuckle.

    • What is the ASX code for THE CROOKED BED Co please?
These shares are going to jump even higher as we get closer to the election!
Need to get in on the “action”!!! Ha!!!

  3. What a disappointment the Federal Government has been, along with the opposition. So many backflips, watered down promises, far too much shouting and no sensible dabate. Whistle-blowers let down, NACC, what a disaster, Aukus, an expensive disaster in the making. Carbon capture, still unproven. Lobby groups still run federal Parliament. Foregein owned Gas companies still not paying a fair share of tax, Pro Israel Lobby, I could go on. The minute labor or the LNP gives the taxpayers a policy. We must hold them account , cos it won’t believe a word any of them say.

  4. Goodness Gracious!
For some reason, not really sure what, I somehow feel the need to remind myself of the separation of powers that divides the institutions of government into three branches: legislative, executive and judicial: the legislature makes the laws; the executive puts the laws into operation; and the judiciary interprets the laws.

What little democracy is currently left in Australia has now taken another blow … this time … unless rectified, political AI, will be a real “kick in the guts”
In the end, we might need to start fact-checking our eyeballs!
This has all become just oh so tiring!

Ever feel you were just another member of an audience at a circus performance?

That’s how I feel right now!

Buckle up, Australia—the 2025 election won’t just be a political battleground.
It WILL BE a war on reality itself.

    • There is no separation of powers in Australia. The UN has assumed authority over the GG. The constitution has been jettisoned. The governments and their agencies now just pretend to be legitimate. There is no consequence because the judiciary are appointed by the parliament (really the executive). And the executive runs the parliament, with penalties for crossing the floor. The legislative assembly are just hand wavers. The 4th estate have crapped in their litter box so many times that they can only exist with campaigns, subsidies and protections from the government (the executive).
A war on reality, that is every Australian election. A** from Elbow is desperately trying to maintain Canberra’s version of reality with his attacks on social media, won’t someone think of the children. We will not surrender sovereignty – says the man who did just that with the WHO pandemic accord.
The really interesting part of the election will be how many people choose either not to participate (withdraw consent) or direct their first pref votes to non-major parties.
