Peter Dutton and Anthony AlbanesePeter Dutton

Is Anthony Albanese better than Peter Dutton?

Whether Anthony Albanese is a better option than Peter Dutton as Prime Minister is a key decision many voters will need to make in the next few months as the federal election is due by May 2025 and could be earlier.

What is also important is by how much swinging voters see one as better than the other because if Albanese was seen as a lot better than Dutton than it would be a landslide victory for Labor and vice versa.

Rusted on voters will vote for their party of choice no matter what, so it is swinging voters who will decide the election like they always do.

The fact that polls point to a hung parliament after the next federal election points to enough swinging voters already making up their minds that they regard both Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton as a poor option, and they will be voting for a minor party or independent candidate.

The key questions for swinging voters are:

  1. Is Anthony Albanese that much better than Peter Dutton that it justifies voting for the Labor Party?
  2. If Albanese is not better than Peter Dutton should people vote for Dutton’s Liberal Party / National Party coalition?
  3. If both Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton are seen as a bad options by voters, as they believe there is little between them, should people vote for a minor party or an independent?

At this point the polls suggest swinging voters are answering “no” to questions 1 and 2 above and answering “yes” to question 3.

The Australia Institute reports (1/11/24):

Since the 2022 election, commentators and reporters have debated whether the wave of new independents was part of a broader movement or just the reflection of a moment.

Elections in the ACT and on the northern beaches of Sydney suggest a movement is on foot.

Canberrans elected two independents, whose vote swelled at the expense of both major parties and the Greens. In the NSW state electorate of Pittwater, the community (or “teal”) independent Jacqui Scruby was victorious in what was, until recently, a safe Liberal seat.

The shift is part of a decades-long decline in the major party vote. At the 1990 federal, election just 9 per cent voted for a minor party or independent. In 2022 the figure was 32 per cent, not far short of the primary votes for Labor and the Liberal-National Coalition. (Click here to read more)

Labor Party – Liberal Party duopoly

When people say Australia has a duopoly in federal politics that is a fact. A duopoly is defined on Wikipedia as “where two firms have dominant or exclusive control over a market, and most (if not all) of the competition within that market occurs directly between them.”

The Labor Party and Liberal Party have taken turns controlling the federal government since the Liberal Party was founded in 1944.

“At the 1910 federal election, Labor was the first party in Australia to win a majority in either house of the Australian parliament. In every election since 1910 Labor has either served as the governing party or the opposition.” (Click here to read more)

“The Liberal Party was founded in 1944 as the successor to the United Australia Party. Historically the most successful political party in Australia’s history.” (Click here to read more)

Labor / Liberal Uniparty

More and more people are starting to use the term Uniparty to describe the Labor Party and Liberal Party given they are supporting each other on key issues such as the fake National Anti-Corruption Commission, the $368 billion AUKUS fraud scam, persecution of whistleblowers and working together to cover-up other corruption like the Sports Rorts scandal. (Click here to read more)

The more people who see the Labor Party and Liberal Party as a Uniparty the more people who will cast their votes for minor parties and independents.

The New Daily reports (5/12/24):

“Come the election, the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition will unite in warning voters against the perils of a hung parliament. Only Labor or the Coalition can form government, we will be told. We should choose one or the other.”

That is true and more evidence of a Uniparty with Labor and the Liberals working together. Or some might argue it just shows the Labor / Liberal duopoly working together. Either way it is not good for democracy.

Labor and Liberal Party spin

Every election, all parties and independents spin why people should vote for them and the 2025 election is no different with some getting in early.

Some Labor voters are already pushing the line “yes Anthony Albanese has his failings but at least he is better than Peter Dutton” which doesn’t exactly instill people with confidence and it’s a very low bar to meet.

As they say, a drover’s dog could beat Peter Dutton and the fact that polls say that Anthony Albanese and Labor will struggle to form majority government after the next election is sad reflection of Albanese and Labor’s lost opportunity over the last 3 years.

Someone commented on one of my YouTube videos recently “Anyone who promotes either of the major parties in Australia today has got to be very comfortable in the dark arts of deception and hypocrisy” and I agree.

My viewpoint is if either the Labor Party or the Liberal Party / National Party coalition win majority power this country is in a lot of trouble. They are both becoming more and more brazen in their corruption, lies and deception.

Declaration: I will be voting independent at the 2025 federal election as I have been for over 10 years.

  1. Some very valid points written here. Disappointed the NACC was/is a complete failure.. more disappointed that the dud sub deal is nothing better than a cesspool of corruption favouring both ALP/LNP mates and considering the RAN has one serviceable Collins class submarine after the pointless sending of hundreds of millions in failed attempts to get the other five buckets of junk seaworthy, the billions in the ‘on hold’ of probably never to be delivered foreign submarines adds to the stupidity of the exercise, combined with the loss of millions on the cancellation of the French submarines, the question remains why does the Australian public continue to accept political parties who are a combination of total incompetence and corruption, so many other political failures costing billions like inland rail that terminates nowhere near a major port, Snowy 2 etc, goes on and on…do some research and if possible, find an independent who had principles and some ethics.
    Meanwhile, Merry Xmas KCA
Look forward to reading the continuation of excellence in reporting on facts in 2025.

    • Well said, mate. Everyone is getting frustrated. We are not being listened to, and the Murdoch factor kills everyone’s voice.

  2. I am bitterly disappointed with Labor. The NACC and AUKUS are just 2 examples of very poor policy decisions.
But I really do wonder whether it’s more about Albanese than the Labor Party as a whole. I have never been a fan of his.
I do wonder whether, under different leadership, Labor wouldn’t have shown greater integrity with its decisions. Either Chalmers or Plibersek, for example.
Albanese, IMO, completely lacks integrity and hasn’t a shred of personable character. I’d say he’s very easily swayed by lobbyists, which a different leader with REAL integrity wouldn’t be.
Anyone capable of reading, with a level of comprehension, should be able to understand that Duttons’ proposed nuclear programne is just one massive lie. The whole shebang is totally ruthless, with costings etc based on either abject ignorance or total lies.
Unless Albanese stands down, I don’t believe that Labor has any hope of retaining power. He’s that on the nose!!!

    • Kiij ckiseky at both parties and the rot that has been evident if people did get involved in their political parties. Albanese is a Sign & Symptom of the ddeep problems and stacking of branches by all sorts of means.

I was raised a devoted Liberal Party member and could see the rot there and got out before Howard got what he planned for and with his local Member Eric WIllis the deputy Premier of NSW all those years

I do not see QUALITY people.

      • “I do not see QUALITY people.” Yes, and that’s our fault. What is it with Australians that we always settle for so little? We need to up our standards, demand more and better, and not vote the way we’ve always voted when it’s so patently clear that we, the environment and our future, are being so utterly screwed!

  3. The Democrats in the recent US elections ran on a ticket of being the lesser of two evils. That did not end well for them. People like being inspired, but neither Albanese or Dutton have any gumption for that.

  4. As voters we have all failed ourselves & our country by relying on a 2 party system that rewards incompetence corruption & political failure by leaving those who fail in Parliament to return at the next Election to reinvent themselves. Politician’s should never be able to Run for office once their party fails to Win an election as Opposition is not the place to just afront & bid their time being paid to just say NO to all & sundry. The Party that did not win must leave office & the Parliamentary rules need to be dramatically changed so we do not have the same Morons ruining our country year after year. the last 40 years of Federal Governments policies & legislation has delivered absolutely nothing to secure Australia’s Sovereignty or build this nation into a Power house of Productivity because Minerals Oil & Gas is given away to foreign entities cheaply with almost little benefit to Australians but huge rewards to the Barons of industry which denies better living conditions for the Nations people!
Shame on all of us for letting our Guard down for the last wasted 40 years. As an Island Nation we do not build Ships! God forbid if we need to Ship anything in time of WAR. We are all Prisoners in Paradise & continue to Praise our leaders failures by reelecting them. Are we are all Mad as Americans after all??

    • Mr Michae,l this should be a newsletter and stapled to every front door (that way it’ll be read by occupants) in the country mate!

    • I couldn’t agree more, Michael. I don’t think we’re very different from Americans, and both sides of politics rely on this. We make it so easy for them! This year, we need to look at the quality Independents and small parties, Libs last and Labor 2nd last.

  5. Independents put in more effort than major party backbenchers.
Independents have meaningful conversations with their constituents.
    Independents truly represent their electorate.

    • John, I’d like to point out that Helen Haines is and independent and sitting member of Indi, where I live. She has been one of the most vocal supporters in favour of the establishment of a NACC, even submitting a bill to parliament to make it happen.

Her latest newsletter to constituents boasts about how successful it’s been in its first year. Sounds like she’s trying to pull the wool over my eyes and I’m not impressed.

  6. KCoA asks a fair question above, but Shane also begs the question of which is the preferred Party? Casting our minds back to when the LNP were incumbents, do we really want Taylor, Ley, Littleproud, McKenzie, Price etc returned to the Government benches? Admittedly there has been an appalling lack of spine regarding the NACC, pursuing the dud sub deal, but a front bench of Wong, Chalmers, Plibersek, McKenzie etc seems a far better deal. So, perhaps the best move for Labor is to move on Albanese and Marles and advance their younger team?

    • These politicians you mention in your comment have been in that party for years and we need LEADERS with vision and who can stand up and be counted.

Clean out the deadwood by voting for true independents, like Senator Gerard Rennick in Queensland who resigned from the Libs and has recently registered and started his own party – The Peoples Party.

Wong, Plibersek and like can all stand as independents

All citizens of Australia need to take responsibllity and get involved in many ways in the directions that Australia needs to take, and take actions with holding their politicians to account by being ACTIVE.

  7. I am VERY disappointed in Dreyfus re the whistleblower fiasco, and the NACC. I thought Labor would be better than the LNP, but they are no better and seem in cahoots with them (eg AUKUS). I will be voting independent at the next election as the LNP and Labor seem to treat the electorate as mugs. I would like to know how many millionaires/billionaires there are the the current federal Parliament – and how did they make their $’? If a person has been politician for 20+ years, how are they multi-millionaires on a parliamentary salary?

    • Bloody good question mate, I do believe we have the right to know and also to know how many have been criminal charges.
Mr Shane, is there a way of getting this information without adding to your troubles?
Mind you Mr Shane Dowling to me your the best outlaw our country has ever had the privilege of calling one of our own.
You should be our Prime Minister mate, got my vote!

  8. “Declaration: I will be voting independent at the 2025 federal election as I have been for over 10 years.”

I also have voted ‘Non Labor/Liberal/National’ for the last 30 years. The more relevant question Shane is, “In what order do you place ALP/Lib/Nat after your 1st preference?”

  9. All things considered, Labor has done an outstanding job, after what had been left of the economy. After what really is a decade of Abbott/Turnbull/Morrison LNP catastrophes. Can anyone actually point out any real positive inspiring policy the LNP had in that decade, or any real positive policy that Dutton actually has now, apart from the distractions the complaint media drown us in 24/7? Anyone even considering voting for Duttons LNP must be so far down these contrived culture war rabbit hole. I don’t think I would even bother replying to them, Period! What would the point be. Dutton voters very much like another servile Trump voters, they probably just do what they’re told by Murdoch media, without even thinking of what are the usual dire consequences?

    • Labor’s record high immigration has ruined housing for younger Australians for the next 20 years. Plus it just made emissions reductions and the fair distribution of resources like water far more problematic. LNP treachery is expected and now workers have nowhere to go, just like the Democrats seeing as Labor have abandoned them. LNP last, Labor second last is a must.

  10. Firstly thank-you Shane for your informative information & giving us the nuts & bolts of topical, questionable behaviour by media, politicians and known figures.👍🎄.. I’ll vote Albo, yes Labor hasn’t done everything right but we must not forget what they have done.. After years of neglect wages starting to rise as they should, Workers having more rights to a fairer safer workplace… Doing something positive addressing climate change again ignored by Libs.. Giving some electricity relief & making large supermarkets accountable for their failures… The world is experiencing economic problems added with wars, the Labor party aren’t magicians that can make world issues vanish & give us status quo.. Liberal would crush & ignore the average Aussie battler , unlike Albo most Libs if not all wouldn’t know what it’s like to struggle they’ve never experienced it thus can’t really empathise, look after their wealthy maté’s & secure themselves in a immoral greedy self serving corporate world….In saying this Jacinta Allan in Victoria must be removed, as caring & genuine as a bank robber with questionable skills for a state premier……👍🎄🙏

  11. I am completely disgusted with almost all politicians and have been for some time, to the point of not voting and risking the trouble that comes with it. Why vote when it makes no difference?
However when I read the comments of fellow Australians and there mutual feelings of anger, frustration and disgust, I am ready to vote once again. Let’s get what we deserve and be lead by some honest good natured Australians!
    Crossing fingers!!!

  12. We,the people have been manoeuvred OUT of power.
it probably started with Whitlam, and pollies of any persuasion have seen how easy it is to defraud the voting public!!If they have a particular area where the people are NOT happy, they import a few thousand foreigners and dump them near the problem areas!!The locals FEEL the threat and disappear ,,,to another electorate, only to lose their collective voice!!If we had some leadership under Menzies?Weve had zip since..Whitlam,Rudd,were a disaster..And we have NOT had a pollie of note since then.On Any side of Any house in Canberra..Better to abolish parliament and have a tribunal ,made up of distinguished ex servicemen and women,,supported by some of our best ,, distinguished lawmen that we can muster!!May God help Australia!!!Canberra won’t!!!!

  13. I hope One Nation doesn’t gain any seats (in fact loses what they have) so their populist drivel comes to a stop.
Labor/Liberal neither of these are optimal choices but I think they are better than One Nation. Can only hope a quality independent shows themselves.
