Australia passed new federal hate speech laws on Wednesday night (20/1/26) and there is still a lot of confusion about how they work and who they affect.
And in breaking news, late on Wednesday night all 11 National Party shadow ministers have resigned from the coalition front bench. The resignations are linked to the new hate speech laws and likely means the end of the coalition at least in the short-term.
Below is a video with 2 interviews, one with Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong on Nine and the other with Attorney-General Michelle Rowland on the ABC’s 7.30 Report explaining the new hate speech laws.
The bottom line is the new hate speech laws only impact on groups, organisations and their members.
Based on what Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong says in the below video “we’re not seeking to crack down on people’s difference of political debate” there is no impact on members of the public saying what they want on social media regarding “political debate”.
Both interviewers in the below video ask the question if someone says Israel is committing genocide is that illegal under the new laws.
It is almost identical to the question I asked Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on “X” (15/1/26) and published on this website in an article on the 18/1/26 as per below: (Click here to see on “X”)

The below video is Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong on Nine (21/1/26) and the Attorney-General Michelle Rowland (20/1/26) on the ABC’s 7.30 Report. (It was published on the Kangaroo Court of Australia YouTube channel on the 21/1/26.)
Neither Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong nor Attorney-General Michelle Rowland could give examples of how the new hate speech laws work, but they expect the police, the courts and all Australians to understand the laws better than they do.
While the new hate speech laws only apply to groups we won’t know until someone is charged and the laws are tested in court what they really cover.
The new laws might be tested when Israeli President Isaac Herzog visits Australia on the 7th of February 2026 with large protests expected.
The new hate speech laws will likely achieve very little, might not even be legal and have been a great distraction away from real issues facing Australians.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese might get a few days rest with the coalition self-destructing but in a week or two Albanese and the federal government will have to explain why they wasted so much time passing laws that achieve little.
Admin: Eight weeks ago, I launched a campaign with a simple goal: find 200 new monthly supporters so I can keep doing this work as a fully independent journalist, running this website and the YouTube channel without corporate backing or paywalls.
Since then, 91 wonderful people have stepped up and become monthly supporters. That’s huge, thank you!
We’re now at 109 to go.
If you’ve been enjoying the work and aren’t yet supporting monthly, I’d be incredibly grateful if you’d consider joining them. Here’s the situation:
Like most independent journalists, I’m basically a one-person small business. Right now a lot of us are feeling the squeeze, just like many small businesses and households are. To stay afloat and keep bringing you the reporting I do, I need roughly 200 more people chipping in whatever they can comfortably afford each month.
Anything from $3 to $100 (or whatever works for your budget) makes a real difference. There’s no lock-in, you can cancel or adjust anytime.
If that feels doable for you right now, you can see all the options on the donations page by clicking here.
Your support, whether it’s a monthly donation, a one-time donation, or just sharing the work, is what keeps independent voices like this one alive.
Please use Facebook, “X”, email and the other buttons below and help promote this article.
Kangaroo Court of Australia is independent media and is 100% crowdfunded by readers like yourself so please support on the links below. Click on the PayPal button below to donate or for other donation options click here to go to the Donations page.

Took them a while to clarify to whom they apply! I wonder if that was deliberate.
While we are talking about religious hate speech, why aren’t the real operatives being called to account? Reading Nikki Savva’s new book “Earthquake”, page 280. It details what incredibly dirty strategies and tactics these Liberal party/Advance/Zionist operatives got up to in our electorates at election time. Perhaps KCA could do an article on this nasty festering Liberal/Advance/Zionist operative mess being kept from the public? We also saw the Exclusive Brethren summonsed on in their hundreds as Liberal party operatives to smother polling booths for the Liberals. What we, the 40% of Australians that stated NO RELIGION on our census need is protection from religious fundamentalists, not protection for them? What we really need is some exposure of just what the hell these various religious fundamentalist operatives are up to in the dark shadowy and very secretive extreme right politics in this country. Before Rhinehart bankrolls a MAGA/Media like fatwa on us. MAGA “Make Australia Gina’s Again”! Rhinehart, Hastie and all her other operatives are just drooling for their chance. This coalition bust up to white ant and undermine Ley and install Gina’s puppet Hastie is countersigned “Operation Gina”.
Thank You Tweed …
Reports show the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church (Exclusive Brethren) were unusually active in the 2025 federal election, volunteering at polling booths in marginal seats. (The EB DON’T VOTE) Both Labor and independent candidates questioned the Coalition about the scale and coordination of this support.
Questions remain whether this was individual volunteering or a coordinated effort.
This isn’t an attack on faith — it’s about transparency. Candidates disclose much about their backgrounds, yet there’s no requirement to reveal religious leanings, affiliations, or how these may influence their decisions or the granting of public funds.
Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s Pentecostal faith shaped public perception and policy, yet voters had no clear way to understand its influence. Recent research shows around 82 % of Australians believe religion should be separate from politics, yet organised religious networks continue quietly influencing elections.
Andrew Hastie provides another example. As a devout Christian, he abstained from the 2017 same‑sex marriage vote, even though a majority of voters nationally and in his electorate of Canning supported change.
These cases show why voters need transparency on MPs’ religious beliefs and how they shape policy and public funding decisions.
Australia’s democracy works best when everything is open and above board. If groups mobilise resources or candidates’ beliefs influence policy, voters deserve to know.
I would humbly request, as Tweed has suggested, that KCA do an article on this ongoing political operative activity involving Liberal, Advance, IPA, and ASPI networks within Australia’s political scene.
This isn’t about limiting faith – it’s about accountability and protecting democratic integrity.
The legislation only applies to groups not individuals says AG Rowland but a group is comprised of individuals so where does the responsibility reside if the now law is broken? How was this complex legislation drafted so quickly & how could the MPs read & understand the 500 plus pages in such a short time? I suspect it was drafted some time ago & was in the PM’s back pocket for just such an occasion. I predict that there won’t be any “unintended” consequences for us citizens – the fix is in.
What nonsense Tim Brandis, had the Opposition taken the view that this was a serious issue to be fixed they would have worked with the Govt to find a common solution. Rather, they saw it as another Voice referendum situation to bash the Govt. Now they, and you, complain of the process adopted to meet the calls for Parliament to be recalled and legislation presented. Your conspiracy theory about Albo’s back pocket is pathetic.
Nice try,Keith, but you have avoided the questions I have posed ie how was this complex legislation drafted so quickly & how many MPs read & understood it. It’s impossible for a non legal expert to get to grips with the turgid legalese. Why bring up the (ex)Coalition? They are completely irrelevant for the forseeable future. Hopefully the High Court will find this hysterical overreaction unconstitutional!
Plymouth Brethren have at least as much right to participate in the electoral process as any other organisation, such as a Trade Union.
The difference between the two? The Plymouth Brethren don’t enjoy the legal right to collect your compulsory Super contributions and donate part of it to the Labor Party.
Well you actually get to vote for Union and Labor party leadership and policy, unlike the theocratic Plymouth Brethren whom aren’t permitted to vote for anything by their cult leaders, but are ordered by those same cult leadership to go out in their hundreds to infest polling booths exclusively for the Liberal party. Thats the difference! And they did infest and monster the secular democratic polling booths, didn’t they. So just what did the Liberals promise in return, for this non voting secretive theocratic sect in return, for their swarm of non voting shock troop deployment against our secular democracy?
Well, the Murdoch Media Empire has been running their 2 minutes of hate against The Brethren possible connections to the NSW Liberal Party for years, but i’m surprised to see it on KCA.
Freedom Of Association ringing any bells for you?
A failing system under pressure ….
…. behaving very predicatively
