The Greens have been caught red-handed covering up sexual harassment allegations against Senator Jordon Steele-John dating back to 2016 after a 47-page dossier was leaked documenting the cover-up.
The 47-page dossier is in effect a confession of the cover-up, or you could call it a blueprint on how to execute the cover-up, and it was “stored on a Google Drive folder accessible to Western Australian Greens and national Greens staff for close to a decade, was first drafted in 2016 and has been updated in the years since.”
The dossier “sets out ways to shut down media coverage of allegations about Steele-John, while also instructing taxpayer-funded Greens staff to monitor social media discussions and take screenshots of comments posted by party members.” (Click here to read more)
Most of the reporting that has been in the media over the last few days about Senator Jordon Steele-John and the sexual harassment allegations was first reported in 2017 by Serkan Ozturk on his website True Crime News Weekly (now True News Weekly) in an article titled “EXCLUSIVE: Greens likened to Catholic Church as star incoming senator Jordon Steele-John accused of “persistent” sexual harassment.” (Click here to read more)
In the below video I discuss the Jordon Steele-John matter with Serkan Ozturk, and he reveals what he knew when he broke the story in 2017 and what he will be writing about in the near future on the scandal.
Greens leader David Shoebridge didn’t cause the scandal, but as leader it is his responsibility to deal with it.
The sexual harassment allegations against Jordon Steele-John are one issue that needs investigating, but the cover-up also needs investigating, and if it is not David Shoebridge is responsible.
As I note in the above video, the investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Jordon Steele-John is being investigated by the WA Greens, which is the same body accused of covering up the same allegations since 2016.
It might be argued that there is no choice but for the WA Greens to do the investigation because Jordon Steele-John is a WA Senator.
But the 47-page dossier is another issue and also has “Under headings including “what is to be shared on background”, “potential initiators of media story”, “complaint received by the party” and “external management plan if story printed”, the dossier sets out how the party should kill the story.”
“Steele-John was to “undergo training with Will [Kelly, a senior media adviser for Greens leaders Richard Di Natale, Adam Bandt, Larissa Waters and now David Shoebridge] in case he was asked about the allegations”.”
“Kelly and Steele-John were instructed to “ensure RDN [then leader Richard Di Natale] are [sic] provided with information”.”
“It adds that “Sophie [Greer] & Tim [Oliver] to keep an eye on Australian Young Greens discussion group”.” (Click here to read more)
There were literally hundreds, and more likely thousands, of man-hours spent by the Greens on the cover-up and preparation in case it hit the media again after True News Weekly broke the story in 2017.
You don’t have half the Greens, senior staff and the leaders involved in a cover-up and forward planning and training if there was not a major issue. That is why the cover-up and dossier need a separate investigation, and David Shoebridge knows it.
The WA Greens might be able to investigate Jordon Steele-John, even though there is a huge conflict of interest given they were involved in the cover-up for 10 years.
But the WA Greens can’t investigate the other Senators and staffers from other states that were also involved to some degree in the cover-up, or had knowledge of the cover-up, and would be witnesses in any investigation.
David Shoebridge is a barrister, and he knows how the game works. “Justice must not only be done, but must manifestly and undoubtedly be seen to be done” R v Sussex Justices, Ex parte McCarthy [1924]
It should be noted that WA’s “four state MPs in WA parliament – Brad Pettitt, Sophie McNeill, Jess Beckerling and Tim Clifford – issued a statement on Friday night saying they considered “any allegations of this nature to be serious and concerning, especially when they involve elected representatives”.”
“Women deserve to feel safe always, and must be able to bring forward complaints safely, and be heard and taken seriously when they do,” the statement said.
“We agree that this matter needs to be resolved via a fair, timely and independent investigation and that all parties are entitled to natural justice and procedural fairness.”
and
“The WA Greens MPs support the investigation including an examination of the processes, including within the WA Greens, that have been followed in relation to this matter so far.” (Click here to read more)
While the WA Greens MPs also called for “an examination of the processes,” they stopped short of calling for a federal investigation into the cover-up even though it is obviously needed.
