The Kangaroo Court of Australia (KCA) website and YouTube channel, which is published by Shane Dowling (me), hit the targeted 200 new monthly supporters last Sunday after a 35-week campaign that shows there is hope for independent media and journalists.

While it is a good achievement that shows promise for independent media, there is still a battle to be had to survive, and with the old media dying, independent media is more important than ever.

There is still no consistent business plan for independent journalists to follow. And there are very few independent journalists who make a full-time living from their reporting, with most having to work full-time or at least part-time in other jobs to survive. So KCA and its supporters have done well.

There are numerous so-called independent journalists, who are grifters selling lies, that have tied themselves to political parties and push their agenda so they are not independent and only blur the truth for readers and viewers of independent media.

But the independent media battle, between journalists reporting the truth and the propagandists pushing lies, needs to be fought and needs to be won.

The future of Australian Media

The old media in Australia are dying, a recent example being that Seven West Media announced in June that it would sack between 250 and 300 staff by the end of June 2026 to save hundreds of millions of dollars.

And Nine Entertainment, which sacked 50 staff only a few months ago in November 2025, announced on the 21st of July it would sack another 30 staff.

New independent media in Australia is not growing at anywhere near the speed that the old media is sacking journalists, so at the moment at least, there is a substantial reduction in the number of journalists holding the powerful accountable.

And with old media companies reliant on government policy for their profitability the old media companies are beholden to the government of the day. This fact does impact their willingness to hold governments to account to the degree they should.

One example of the media companies being reliant on the government for their profitability is the new gambling advertising laws, which were watered down, at least partly, because of lobbying by the old media companies who make $millions from gambling advertising.

Another example is the News Media Bargaining Code, which forces Google, and potentially other large technology platforms, to pay Australia’s old media hundreds of $millions a year.

It means Australia’s old media are reliant on the government to enforce and expand the News Media Bargaining Code for the financial benefit of Australia’s old media.

The federal government definitely take advantage of the old media’s reliance on the government and I published an article in September 2025 titled “How Anthony Albanese’s office secretly co-authors media stories for Nine, Seven, Ten and News Corp etc” which shows how it works.

Probably the biggest positive about the Kangaroo Court of Australia website and YouTube channel is that I am 100% crowdfunded by supporters, and there are no corporate donors or politicians who try and tell me what to write and not to write.

We reached 200 monthly supporters last Sunday (26/7/26) after a 35-week campaign. I had to start the campaign last year after I started going backwards financially just after the May 2025 federal election.

Thank you to the new supporters and also to the original supporters who made the campaign possible.

It means this website and YouTube channel can keep running without having to answer to advertisers or institutions.

Like most independent journalists, I’m a one-person operation. The costs are real, and the work only continues if enough people decide it’s worth supporting directly.

If you take a look over the last few months of my articles and videos, you will see I cover many issues that need to be covered, but other media don’t.

I said previously that Australia needs 100 independent journalists with 1000 supporters each, and it would change the country in a massive way.

Given the old media hasn’t disappeared as quickly as I thought it would and new media hasn’t grown as quickly as I thought it would, I think we need about 50 independent journalists with about 5000 supporters each who then employ at least one other journalist.

To play my part, I need to grow in a major way, and I will be trying to do that.

But at the moment I make a small wage and cover costs so I need to focus on growing so I can make a fair and reasonable living long-term and not start going backwards again.

For the reasons above, I will continue to push hard with fundraising to help this website and YouTube channel to grow.

Australia is currently going through a major change politically and also with its media, and both will benefit Australia over the long run.
