David Shoebridge has been elected leader of the Greens, with the new deputy leader being Steph Hodgins-May, and the question most voters will be asking is: Will it make a difference?

It could give The Greens a huge boost, or it could be a fizzer.

Previous leader of the Greens, Larissa Waters, resigned as leader because of health issues, and while coming across as a nice person, she failed to get any real traction with voters.

The Greens have jumped up recently in Roy Morgan polls, with the latest giving the Greens 15% of first-preference votes after a long period of being around 12%.

But I think the Greens rise in the polls is more to do with people jumping ship from the Labor / Liberal parties than anything the Greens have done.

The Greens need to become more aggressive, and they seem to realise that with Steph Hodgins-May posting on “X”, “We’re not here to reform Labor, we’re here to replace them.” (Click here to see on “X”)

The Greens held a press conference on Wednesday (30/9/26) announcing the new leadership as per below:

I published an article on the 25th of June 2026 titled “Penny Wong’s lies exposed defending big gas companies,” which was about Senator Steph Hodgins-May exposing Penny Wong’s lies and deflecting in parliament, which is the type of aggressive questioning that is needed if the Greens want to grow their popularity with voters.

Below is a video from that article of Senator David Shoebridge and Senator Steph Hodgins-May carving up Penny Wong in the Senate, which is a vote winner.

One Nation has shown that voters will jump ship from the Labor / Liberal Party duopoly, and if the Greens can move from the current 15% of the primary vote to about 20%, we would then have a 4-horse race between Labor, Liberals, One Nation and the Greens.

If the Greens can get to 20% of the primary vote, or close to it, it would put pressure on all media to give them more coverage, which would also boost their vote.

The more horses in the political race, the better it is for voters.

The reason I haven’t mentioned the Nationals is because they will be lucky to survive after the next federal election.

And Independents never poll high federally because they are restricted to a few seats, although I expect the number of Independents to grow at the next federal election from the current high of 10 seats.

Labor is settled at 26% of the primary vote in the last couple of polls. How far do they need to fall before the Labor sharks start circling Prime Minister Anthony Albanese?

The Greens need to focus their attacks on the Labor government, as there would be very few One Nation voters who will jump ship to vote for the Greens.

The weak point for the Greens is they have been seen by many voters as a party that whinges a lot but ultimately rubber-stamps Labor policies in the Senate when it comes to the crunch.

The Greens need to show voters they will play hardball with Labor, and it sounds like that is the plan under David Shoebridge. Now it’s time for the Greens to deliver.
