Anthony Albanese and Darcy ByrnePrime Minister Anthony Albanese

PM Albanese’s former staffer, Mayor Darcy Byrne, is behind the dodgy $6 million Golf Club grant

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s lies about the $6 million Marrickville Golf Club grant keep growing as he tells more lies to cover up the first batch of lies, and that will be his undoing.

It turns out the key person behind the $6 million grant is Inner West Council Mayor Darcy Byrne, who worked as a staffer in Anthony Albanese’s federal office from 2010 to 2019.

The Inner West Council owns the Marrickville golf club, and Mayor Darcy Byrne was the main driver of the grant via his mate Anthony Albanese, as per 2 videos from Darcy Byrne’s Facebook page below.

This article is a follow-up to my previous article titled “Exposed: PM Anthony Albanese the $6 million liar,” which starts off:

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been exposed lying on national TV, as per the below video, about a $6 million grant his government gave to a golf club in his electorate. The grant was part of a $560 million pork-barrelling scam to buy the Labor Party votes at the 2025 federal election. There are 2 key new lies I will focus on in this article:

Lie about the $6 million being spent on a sewage problem

As you will see below, there was never any allocation in the $6 million federal grant to fix sewage issues as PM Albanese claimed, and after the 2025 federal election, the NSW government gave the golf club $270,000 to fix the sewage problem.

This raises 2 key questions. When PM Albanese was asked about the golf club grant in September 2026, why did he claim the grant was to fix the sewage problem when it had nothing to do with it? And why did Albanese claim the whole $6 million was to fix the sewage problem?

Even if part of the $6 million was to fix the sewage problem, which it wasn’t, it was only $270,000 which is only about 5% of the $6 million. But Albanese claimed the whole $6 million was for the sewage issue. Why?

The reality is there is no justification for spending $6 million on a Golf Club when many Australians are struggling financially, and Albanese knows that, so he lied to try and justify it.

Lie about not knowing the directors

PM Anthony Albanese claimed he did not know any of the directors of the golf club, implying he had nothing to do with the grant.

But the Mayor of a Council is the equivalent of the Chairman of the Board of Directors. And the Mayor of the Inner West Council, which owns the Golf Club, is Darcy Byrne who worked directly for Anthony Albanese for 9 years, from 2010 to 2019.

Darcy Byrne’s Wikipedia page says:

Darcy Byrne (born 1980 or 1981) is an Australian politician who has served as the mayor of Inner West Council since December 2021. He has also been a councillor for Inner West Council since 2017. He is also currently serving as president of Local Government NSW. (Click here to read more)

In June 2026 the SMH wrote:

Byrne is seen as the heir apparent to Albanese in his federal seat of Grayndler. Byrne and Albanese have been close for many years, professionally and personally. He started working for Albanese in 2010, the week after Kevin Rudd was deposed by Julia Gillard. Byrne stayed in Albanese’s office until 2019. He was at Albanese’s wedding when he married Jodie Haydon late last year.

The pair were due to meet for a beer at the Marrickville Bowling Club on January 8, 2021 – the day the then-federal Labor leader had a serious car cash, which he was lucky to survive. Byrne took a call from his mate and was the first on the scene to witness Albanese’s brush with death. “Another 30 centimetres and I don’t think Albo would be prime minister today,” Byrne says. Darcy Byrne’s Facebook page has dozens of pictures of himself with Anthony Albanese at political events going back years, so they are obviously very close.

Given the close relationship between Anthony Albanese and Darcy Byrne and the fact that they both benefit politically from the $6 million Golf Club grant, it is obvious the grant was negotiated between themselves.

The below video was posted on Darcy Byrne’s Facebook page on the 29th of April 2025, just days before the federal election on the 3rd of May 2025.

The caption below the video says,

BIG NEWS: PM Albanese has announced $6 million for a full renovation of the Marrickville Golf Clubhouse.

A reelected Australian Labor Government will secure this last step in saving Marrickville Golf Course.

This will allow even more sport, recreation, live music and community events at Royal Marrickville.

Vote 1 Labor to help secure the future of Marrickville Golf Course.

The below video was posted to Darcy Byrne’s Facebook page on the 31st of July 2025, after the federal election in May 2025. The caption below the video says,

Following the Albanese Government’s investment of $6 million to secure the future of the Marrickville Golf Club, Inner West Council will partner with the club to commence the design process.

The Marrickville Golf Club is a much-loved community asset and sporting precinct and one of the most precious areas of open space in the Inner West.

The clubhouse is a community hub that hosts a vast array of events and gatherings for local organisations but is desperately in need of an upgrade.

The $6 million investment from the Albanese Government will ensure a full renovation of the clubhouse, including improved accessibility, modern amenities, and a range of other improvements.

Neither of the videos above mentions any sewage problem at the Golf Club which shows the $6 million grant had nothing to do with fixing sewage issues.

On the 9th of September 2026, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was asked about the $6 million Golf Club grant and made it very clear it was only to fix the sewage problem, as per below. Federal MP Helen Haines is in the below video towards the end calling out the scam.

On Wednesday (28/10/26) Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was exposed for lying about the grant being to fix the sewage problem, as per the below video:

The Australian Senate is currently conducting an inquiry into the $560 million pork-barrelling scam and is covering the $6 million Golf Club grant as part of the inquiry.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has boxed himself in, and I can’t see any way out for him.

  1. Agreed, absolutely, Robert.

Every day, the difference between the LNP and the ALP shrinks. Today, they represent the biggest betrayal of the people of Australia.

  2. Unfortunately,Albanese will just ride out the news cycle over this. The msm & Labor “insiders” are largely blaming his main rival,Dr Jim Chalmers, over the dire state of our economy so it’s clear sailing to the next election.

  3. It costs up to $50 on the weekend – which is near the equivalent of the daily unemployment benefit rate – to have a round of golf at Marrickville. I’m sure ratepayers on the average wage in the inner west must be fiercely jostling for a start in the club championship.

The cost of maintaining the golf course with ratepayers’ hard earned will become unsustainable soon enough. But, that lovely clubhouse will be beautifully repurposed by the Council and make lots of lovely money – but for whom?

When the course does buckle due to upkeep costs, we can only hope that it remains a much needed inner-west greenspace/public park.

That should be a safe bet given Albo’s progress on public and social housing builds but, I’d be interested to know what Albo’s wagering company mates put the odds at of this occuring.
