Does Prime Minister Anthony Albanese deserve to be re-elected?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese looks set to fall over the line and serve a second 3-year term as Prime Minister.

Going by the polls, and betting agencies, the only issue that needs to be determined is whether Albanese and Labor win with another majority government of are reliant on The Greens, minor parties and/or Independents to govern as a minority government.

Anthony Albanese and Labor only scraped over the line in 2022 against the despised Scott Morrison government, winning 77 seats of the 151 in the House of Representatives.

Albanese and Labor were on target to lose seats this election but have struck it lucky with a totally incompetent campaign by opposition leader Peter Dutton.

Anthony Albanese will not go down in history as a popular Prime Minister and the fact that he just managed to beat Scott Morrison and likely won’t do much better, and possibly worse, against Peter Dutton says it all.

The SMH reports:

Of the nation’s 150 electorates, Labor is now favourite in 77, which is the same number as Albanese’s side won at the 2022 poll.

On markets for total seats won, the Coalition is expected to secure between 61 and 65. Several bookmakers have Labor to win between 76 and 80, with the next most likely result between 71 and 75, which would likely enable Albanese to helm a minority government.

Bookmakers are agreed on changes to just a handful of seats. All believe Aston, which Labor’s Mary Doyle won from the Coalition at a byelection in 2023, and Gilmore on the NSW south coast, will go to the Liberals on May 3.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton is also tipped to take back the Victorian seat of Kooyong and Ryan in Queensland. (Click here to read more)

Does Prime Minister Anthony Albanese deserve to be re-elected?

The only real positive Anthony Albanese has going for him is that he is not Peter Dutton and by itself it isn’t much of a positive because the negatives far outweigh it for many voters.

Major negatives are the cost-of-living crisis and rental / housing crisis, failed National Anti-Corruption Commission, spending $368 billion on AUKUS and federal debt passing $1 trillion and deficits for the next 10 years or more.

Below is Richard Denniss on QandA (14/4/25) “We live in a rich country but feel poor”. It is edited with mostly Richard Denniss’ responses, and he adds a lot of value especially on cost-of-living issues:

Both the major parties have failed to address cost of living issues to any real degree, and that is exposed in the above video, and it will become more and more clear after the election no matter who wins.

Will Peter Dutton do a Bill Shorten and remain Opposition leader after losing the federal election?

Bill Shorten lost the 2016 federal election but hung around for another go in 2019 so even if Dutton loses this election, which seems very likely, he might still retain the opposition leadership and have another go at becoming Prime Minister in 2028.

For people who say that won’t happen, well what other options do the coalition have? Angus Taylor? Michaelia Cash? Jacinta Nampijinpa Price? etc.

Based on performance Albanese and Labor don’t deserve re-election but they fall over the line in front, by a nose, because Peter Dutton and his shadow ministry are so bad.

If Albanese and Labor do win again, the best result for Australia is a minority government because neither of the major parties can’t be trusted to do the right thing by voters.

  1. Gambling reform, effective controls on corruption, environmental regulation reform: they are just three areas both major parties have failed because they are too controlled by powerful backers. I believe a minority government could have a chance of being progressive and deal with sone of these issues that have not been properly addressed for years

  2. Everytime Dutton, Cash Ley Taylor open their mouth, the LNP lose votes, let’s not forget their partners in ignorance and stupidity, Littleproud and the hidden out of sight Joyce, all best described as total embarrassments out of the dictionary of Tony Abbott’s mistakes, misjudgments and plain stupidity, Albonese may just get back in but not by a record of good government but rather by the ignorance and apathy of a public who long gave up on the hope of any honest and forward thinking government to represent their best interests.

  3. Unfortunately we have a poorly informed polity. The Morrison years were a nightmare but amnesia in the bubble that mainstream media depends on is a major obstacle to any kind of truth. And this rubbish about balance is always subjective. Anyway you do a good job KCA and I hope Labor wins for that parcel of fools that is LNP would tip me over the edge.

  4. It always amuses me, the political fiction that Australians vote IN Govts. Then they claim a ‘mandate’ for policies they have not wanted anyone to use as reasons to vote, because they want us all to be blindly loyal to our political ‘team’. The reality is we always vote for the least worst. We vote unpopular Govts that make life to hard for us OUT.

At last we are waking up to the way this system only benefits corporate political donors who want to shape policy – we (the public)don’t get considered in policy. Look at how they refuse to stop MO, knowing it is probably illegal, for the sole reason that it might impact the profits of the Job Agencies (clearly Sarina Russo being pictured cosying up to Albo had results) Never mind that people are killing themselves over the stress and misery.

This election the boomer demographic is finally outnumbered by the younger generations, Millennials and Gen Z. To me, this is the reason both majors are running scare campaigns against minority Govt – because they do not want to work for us, they want to sit at the trough and rake it in. Times are changing, but those who benefit from the current system are resisting mightily.

  5. Good article KCA. Richard Dennis and Ken Henry need to be listened to. Both are saying that Australia desperately needs economic reform. I’m sure that Chalmers knows this too and wants to do it, but Albanese has kiboshed it. Why? And why the pathetic NACC? For a leftist Labour man, Albanese has become the good friend of the rich. He’s the biggest con imaginable. Labor under Albanese certainly doesn’t deserve to win. And neither do the Coalition. Australia desperately needs a hung parliament. We also need a bit of Socialism thrown in to bring back empathy in politics.

  6. “Major negatives are the cost-of-living crisis and rental / housing crisis, failed National Anti-Corruption Commission, spending $368 billion on AUKUS and federal debt passing $1 trillion and deficits for the next 10 years or more.”

Not to mention the grinding to a halt on climate change, the acceptance of a continuing genocide in Gaza and the concomitant manipulation of a fake antisemitism ‘crisis’ in Australia, the abject cave-in to a foreign-owned, non-taxpaying environmental-polluting salmon farmer, and the continued incarceration of asylum-seekers at enormous profit for foreign-owned private prison operators.

  7. The election campaign has become an embarrassing spectacle, dominated by relentless lobbying, electorate buffoonery, partisan think tanks, and media outlets that peddle bias at every turn. The entire process feels like a mockery, and as a result, I’ve lost every last iota of trust and faith in the system.

The political circus surrounding us leaves little room for meaningful debate or genuine leadership, and it’s disheartening to witness the manipulation of voters by both sides. It is totally disheartening!

On one side, Dutton offers national security and immigration policies, through the element of fear and appealing to voters focused on safety and sovereignty. All other policies are reminiscent of bullet points in a pamphlet, AGAIN! No costings, whatsoever are offered. That along with his divisive leadership style and limited broader appeal will hinder his chances with a wider electorate.

Albanese is seen as steady and progressive, focusing on social issues like climate change and equality. While praised for his leadership during crises, his handling of economic challenges, such as the cost-of-living crisis, has drawn criticism. There’s frustration over slow action on urgent issues and some internal party tensions, along with concerns that Albanese lacks a bold, transformative vision for the country.

Dutton’s security-focused platform appeals to conservatives, while Albanese’s progressive approach resonates more with those prioritising social reforms. Albanese is likely to secure a second term due to his broader appeal and stable leadership.

In the past, one of these leaders might have received #1 on my ballot paper, but neither will this time. This is a very interesting time in Australian history!

    • What a couple of clowns. Tweedledum and tweedledee. Both majors have lost the confidence of the people, where do we go from here except down? A clever country that is not clever anymore. A rich country that is not rich anymore. Idiots in charge and one can only be very sad for the future. I hate to be a pessimist but no choice.

  8. OMG…have to say I agree with every commenter here! That must be a first for me! I can’t think of any prior election where I have despised both leaders and don’t want either to win. Why can’t we have politicians who think of the future of the country instead of self interest and just winning the next election. Unfortunately those candidates wouldn’t be elected in today’s dog eat dog world!

    • Perhaps you’ve just answered your own question. Politicians who think of the country wouldn’t be elected, because vested interests would make sure they weren’t.

  9. I think that Labor could have been a good government for the people if it wasn’t tied by the Albanese umbilical cord to the Union movement which is as corrupt as ever and getting stronger. It was no surprise that Albanese was the most easily manipulated person for the job and he was protected from an overthrow by giving key portfolios to strategic members
Shorten, Wong, Marles and lets not forget the AG who was also a go between for Netanyahu as he went and met with the Israeli Head of Genocide even after the ICC had declared him as a War Criminal
Albanese is a weak man as he has not made any comments on the Genocide occurring in Palestine > He saved Duttons bacon when there there was the insider trading story Albanese claims that his Government is squeaky clean when it clearly is not and some members of both sides up to the necks in corruption

  10. It is sad that the majority of Australians focus only on the two worst candidates and their political parties as if there are no others that could do the job. There will never be change for Australians as long as we continually see only a two party tag team option.

    • I couldn’t agree more. I know most Australians are struggling to see the Genocide the way our too majors do, but most, sadly, will still give their precious vote to one of them. No way in hell will I be doing that.

  11. I wish that Albo had advisers of your quality and honesty. My guess is that he’ll exceed 77.

  12. WHAT is wrong with Ozzies, that they cannot SEE and HEAR the plethora of people offering themselves as Independents in this Election? Senator Gerard Rennick and like independents. There has never been so much choice before-do not waste it.

THINK and ask the questions of those Independents by emailing them

The days of automatically giving loyalty to a party have gone.

Mr Dennis in ths video (above) is slapping you on the face to wake you up?

The rest of the video was patronising. THINK and ask probiung questions and check the backgrounds of those offereing themselves for Election. People who shall be transparent with regular reporting to their Electorates.

    • > “WHAT is wrong with Ozzies, that they cannot SEE and HEAR the plethora of people offering themselves as Independents in this Election? Senator Gerard Rennick and like independents. There has never been so much choice before-do not waste it.”

I was telling a friend about the Australian Citizens Party who are aware of the major issues, and he assumes that they are nothing but a bunch of radicals. Shows just how dumb the majority are. They would rather watch trash like MAFS and Netflix instead of doing any research for themselves. I live in an area where the Liberal candidate and the independent are neck in neck, but if the Liberal candidate wins, the upgrade to the hospital that we need won’t get built.

      • And WHAT are the policies of both Candidates?

What is their Policy on Health care/The WHO? and so much more,

WHAT is their Foreign Polici(ies) especially in this time of upheaval and “misinformation” that are constantly being changed without reference to the GOvernment – Government means/are The People, in a World that is rapidly being altrered to the objectives of the minority?

How do you intend to hold your Party to account, on behalf of The Gvernment means The People. the politician is the employee of The People whose taxes pay for their Salary and Superannuation.

How does each Candidate aim to achieve IF elected the LIST of ALL monies paid to various groups, International groups, Subsidies and like payments of the Taxpayers money.

An open list of external people (non elected) sitting on committees, Government Departments and like.

There are so many questions that need to be recorded and the employees held to Account.,

Take this list to a meeting by Candidates and QUESTION with a tape recorder in hand…

  13. Sad that Albo and Dutt are the best / only options we have for PM. Neither could lie straight in bed. Bovine hindlegs are same as these two.

    • NO they are NOT!!

You have other parties and independents standing for election, and many far more qualified and of good repute than the two you mention.,

Possibly one of these two you mention and maybe both may not WIN. and in the new Parliament people can put themselves forward.

SO please stop beign fatallistic. Australia needs positive people.

  14. Following on from my comment – refer above

I cannot for the life of me, watch another debate or report of a “presser” or gotcha questions or interviews by unqualified questioners – even those with a supposed qualification in journalism or “he said, she said” or just plain lying!

As a result of this, in my honest opinion, sham, deeply flawed and manipulated election campaign, I believe that a set of comprehensive, mandatory tests should precede anyone becoming a political candidate.

The current spectacle has eroded public trust and reduced democratic participation to media spin, partisan posturing, and lobbyist interference. It is unacceptable that those seeking public office face fewer pre-qualification requirements than everyday Australians applying for roles involving far less power or consequence. The process feels increasingly compromised and unworthy of the responsibilities at stake. As a starter kit, this is what I have come up with.

Below is a comprehensive, all-encompassing series of mandatory tests that all political candidates – regardless of party affiliation – must pass before becoming eligible to stand for election.

These tests reflect the standards expected of professionals in other fields where critical decisions, leadership, trust, and public responsibility are required e.g. military, aviation, judiciary, healthcare, law enforcement. They are tailored to the duties and consequences of public office and combine competency, ethics, health, and fitness-to-serve criteria.

    Cognitive & Analytical Ability Tests
    Ethics & Integrity Examination
Australian Civic & Legal Knowledge Test
Communication, Public Debate & Listening Skills Assessment
    Transferable Skills Review (Employment Experience)
    Drug & Alcohol Screening
Psychological and Mental Health Fitness Evaluation
Physical Health Declaration & Capability Review
    Cultural Awareness & Inclusion Aptitude
National Security & Foreign Influence Clearance
    Economic & Fiscal Competency Test
    Digital Literacy & Cybersecurity Awareness
    Independent Oversight Evaluation

    ❌ Disqualification Conditions
A candidate is disqualified if they:
Fail three or more core categories (e.g. Ethics, Mental Fitness, Budget Literacy).
Refuse to participate in any test.
Are found to have lied on disclosures or background checks.
Are under investigation or conviction for a criminal offence.

    ✅ Certification
Candidates who pass are awarded a Certificate of Democratic Fitness to Stand, say, let’s call it a CDFS – renewable every 3 years – and become eligible to seek preselection, re-election or independent nomination.

If these tests were mandatory, Parliament House would echo with emptiness – most of today’s candidates wouldn’t even pass the front gate. But we can only live in hope. Hope that one day, competence, integrity, and accountability will matter more than spin, slogans, and staged photo ops.

  15. No one has mentioned Senator David Pocock.
I live in the ACT and am proud to say that he has been a thorn in the side of all the Parties.
He stand for what is right and fair.
He follows no party lines but votes on principles, fairness and equality.
If we dissolved Party lines, big business demands and vested interests and instead relied on what is good and right for us all then we would have a far better system of Government.
It will never happen in my lifetime but I can dream can’t I.
