National Anti-Corruption Commission Commissioner Paul Brereton, who is infamous for corruptly trying to sweep the Robodebt 6 crimes and corruption under the carpet, has again shown he regards himself above the law or being accountable to anyone, and is possibly back trying to cover-up war crimes again.
But given Paul Brereton was appointed NACC Commissioner with the task of concealing government corruption that should be expected.
The big question to keep in mind, which everyone seems to have missed, when reading this article is:
Why should Paul Brereton be allowed to continue to consult and give advice to The Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force (IGADF) given Brereton was exposed trying to protect senior defence officers from potential war crimes charges in The Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force Afghanistan Inquiry Report (also known as the Brereton Report).
The ABC reported the latest Brereton lie (29/9/25):
The National Anti-Corruption Commission’s chief commissioner, Paul Brereton, has continued providing “critical” capability to the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force (IGADF) while leading the federal watchdog, despite previous assurances he had stepped away.
A statement from the corruption watchdog, provided on behalf of Mr Brereton to budget estimates earlier this year, said the commissioner had resigned as assistant inspector-general of the ADF in May of 2023, prior to him taking on the chief commissioner role.
“Commissioner Brereton was appointed an assistant inspector-general of the ADF in May 2016, and resigned that appointment in or about May 2023 before commencing as commissioner,” the agency said.
But Department of Defence documents show Mr Brereton, who led the landmark inquiry into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan, is continuing to provide “critical” capability to the body.
In response to questions from the ABC, the commission said Mr Brereton had resigned as assistant inspector-general before becoming commissioner, but confirmed he has “occasionally” consulted for the body since becoming head of the integrity watchdog in June 2023. (Click here to read more)
The Brereton Inquiry
Paul Brereton headed up the Brereton Inquiry and published The Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force Afghanistan Inquiry Report, commonly known as the Brereton Report.
Wikipedia says:
The independent commission was initiated by the Inspector-General of the Australian Defence Force in 2016, and after a long investigation, delivered its final report on 6 November 2020. The redacted version was released publicly on 19 November 2020.
The report found evidence of 39 murders of civilians and prisoners by (or at the instruction of) members of the Australian special forces, which were subsequently covered up by ADF personnel. The report stated 25 ADF personnel were involved in the killings, including those who were “accessories” to the incident. (Click here to read more)
Paul Brereton exposed for his lies in the Brereton Report
On the 19th of May 2024 I published an article titled “Corrupt NACC Commissioner Paul Brereton exposed protecting his mates in the ADF, including Governor-General David Hurley, from war crimes” which starts off:
National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) Commissioner Paul Brereton headed up the “Brereton Inquiry” into war crimes by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan with Brereton finding “that some responsibility for the “murder” of 39 Afghan prisoners and civilians could not fall on the most senior officers”.
The problem is that Commissioner Paul Brereton is also Major General in Australia’s Army Reserve so the “most senior officers” are Brereton’s mates and it should be no surprise that Brereton found they were not liable for the “murder” of 39 Afghan prisoners and civilians.
Brereton has been busted in his “Brereton Inquiry report” trying to protect his “senior officer” mates in the Australian Defence Force (ADF) which totally undermines Paul Brereton’s position as Commissioner of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC).
The government also set up the Afghanistan Inquiry Implementation Oversight Panel to oversee the implementation of the recommendations in the Brereton Inquiry report.
A report by the Afghanistan Inquiry Implementation Oversight Panel was only released on Thursday (16/5/24) and the ABC reported:
Afghanistan panel suggests military top brass be held ‘accountable’ for command failures over alleged war crimes
Serving and former defence chiefs, including Governor General David Hurley, are facing fresh calls to take responsibility for command failures which may have led to alleged war crimes in Afghanistan under their watch.
A report from an independent panel appointed to oversee the landmark Brereton inquiry has finally been released, warning that a lack of accountability from Australia’s military top brass has generated “anger and bitter resentment” among troops and veterans.
In 2020, a report prepared for the Inspector General of the Australian Defence Force by Justice Paul Brereton recommended 19 soldiers be investigated by police for the “murder” of 39 Afghan prisoners and civilians, and the cruel treatment of two others.
Now, the subsequent Afghanistan Inquiry Implementation Oversight Panel has rejected Justice Brereton’s conclusion that senior commanders should not be held accountable for the murders of 39 Afghans.
“The Panel did not agree with the Brereton Inquiry’s view that some accountability and responsibility could not fall on the most senior officers, and it suggested that issue should be the subject of further consideration,” it said.
“There is ongoing anger and bitter resentment amongst present and former members of the special forces, many of whom served with distinction in Afghanistan, that their senior officers have not publicly accepted some responsibility for policies or decisions that contributed to the misconduct, such as the overuse of special forces.”
Members of the oversight panel, led by former inspector-general of intelligence and security Vivienne Thom, also compared the failure of senior Defence leaders to accept accountability for war crimes to company bosses who face dismissal or even criminal charges for corporate collapses.
“In the private sector, major corporate failures result in both an organisational and individual responsibility,” the report handed to the government in November 2023 states.
“Personal knowledge or direct involvement of the senior officers in the causes or behaviour that led to the corporate failure are not required.” (Click here to read more) (Click here: for a full copy of the Afghanistan Inquiry Implementation Oversight Panel report)
For example, if an employee dies working for a company in breach of Workplace Health and Safety laws on a construction site, the directors can be found liable and jailed and fined, which Paul Brereton would know because he is also a former judge of the Supreme Court of NSW. Paul Brereton, who is a Major General in the Army Reserve, tried a deceptive trick with his Brereton Report, for the IGADF, trying to protect senior defence officers, and he is still consulting to the IGADF.
It raises the question: Is Paul Brereton still consulting to the IGADF trying to protect senior defence officers from possible war crimes charges?
The fact that Brereton lied about his continued role with the IGADF points to Brereton having something to hide and he knows it is dishonest, if not criminal, at the very least.
Other circumstantial evidence that suggests Paul Brereton would still be trying to cover-up war crimes is that in 2023/2024 Brereton tried to protect his mate, and fellow Army Reserve officer, Kathryn Campbell from the Robodebt 6 criminal investigation by sweeping the investigation under the carpet.
Senator David Shoebridge tweeted after the latest Brereton scandal:
Commissioner Brereton told the public and parliament that his position with Defence was entirely honorary, now we know that is not true, that he is part of a chain of advice to Ministers and Defence.
Defence is one of the NACC’s biggest focuses with corruption complaints about billions of dollars of procurement contracts, that Brereton can’t see the conflict of interest when he is both working for Defence and reviewing corruption allegations just beggars belief.
Every day Brereton heads the NACC wearing this two hats, one as Commissioner and another as Major General, he is eroding trust in the independence and integrity of the National Anti-Corruption Commission. (Click here to see on “X” formerly Twitter)
But as another social media user said in response to Senator Shoebridge, “It beggars belief only if you don’t understand what’s going on. The NACC was designed to cover up corruption. I doubt he is the only person appointed to ensure it does as intended.”
Senator David Pocock also tweeted after the latest scandal:
“The NACC commissioner is a critical role at an institution designed to maintain trust in our institutions.
One of the highest paid public servants in the country (over $700k/year) shouldn’t be consulting at all, especially not in a way that raises concerns about conflicts of interest. Commissioner Brereton has more serious questions to answer. (Click here to see on “X” formerly Twitter)
The real problem is not Commissioner Paul Brereton or the NACC. The real problem is Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his government set the NACC up to cover up corruption and opposition MPs should start saying that instead of focusing their attack solely on Commissioner Paul Brereton and his lies and corruption.

How can the government continue to support Brereton. Oh yes, that’s what they want
Is he a public servant? Nuff said!!!
I have also published a video of the above article on the Kangaroo Court of Australia YouTube channel here: https://youtu.be/RbVbjIRiiNI
The scapegoating of the foot soldiers and exoneration of any responsibility on the part of the top brass is also what prompted David McBride to blow the whistle on this corruption. The ABC (with typical ABC superficiality) didn’t get the systemic corruption by reducing this to ‘just a few bad apples”. McBride gets years in jail for exposing the rot in Defence while the rotten commanders escape any criticism. This is the army, for heaven’s sake, with a rigid and strict chain of command. If the commanders didn’t know what was going on, then they were incompetent.
I fail to see that highlighting the action (if proven) of “foot soldiers”, is “scapegoating”, please explain?
The events that it is claimed took place in Afghanistan need a full and public review, unless this takes place, all Australians are besmirched.
There is a publicly available photo of soldiers in Afganistan drinking from a “yard of beer” made from a prosthetic leg.
I am not aware that drinking from a “prosthetic leg” is illegal anywhere, perhaps you could advice me where it is?
I’ve had enough – in fact, I’ve had a gutful!
I am sick of powerful “big wigs” strutting around as if they have the right to act in my name. Illegal invasions? War crimes? Cover-ups stacked on cover-ups?
Not in my name.
They never asked me. They never asked the people. They just assume our silence equals consent. Well, here’s my voice: I reject it outright.
I will not be dragged into their lies or tied to their reckless decisions. Let it be clear — the blood on their hands is not mine. The shame is not mine. The silence is not mine.
Not now, not ever. – NOT IN MY HAME!
if this grub had anything to do with the MURDERS robodebt caused then he is nothing but scum ,same as Morrison ,and that accessory Tudge.
