The real reason NACC Commissioner Paul Brereton resigned – He has 2 new corruption findings against him about to be made public

NACC Commissioner Paul Brereton, who resigned on Monday (25/5/26), is not only facing a second corruption investigation but also a third corruption investigation, which the Inspector of the NACC Gail Furness SC announced at a Senate hearing on Tuesday night (26/5/26), as per the below video.

It was well known that Commissioner Paul Brereton, who was found guilty of officer misconduct in October 2024 after the first corruption inquiry, is currently being investigated over a second corruption allegation regarding his links to the Australian Defence Force.

But the third corruption investigation into Brereton’s handiwork, for an unknown reason, that Inspector of the NACC Gail Furness SC announced to the Senate on Tuesday night caught everyone by surprise, including Greens Senator David Shoebridge, who was asking the questions, and myself as I watched it on the livestream.

It was widely assumed that Paul Brereton announced his resignation because of the known second corruption investigation, but now we know there is a second and third corruption investigation afoot, there can be no doubt that Brereton has jumped before he was pushed.

There can also be no doubt that NACC Commissioner Paul Brereton hopes that by resigning before the findings of the second and third corruption investigations have been finalised, they will disappear when he finishes up on Monday the 6th of July 2026.

Commissioner Paul Brereton is in receipt of draft reports for both the second and third corruption investigations and, based on the below video, has put the go-slow routine on responding to them to drag out any findings until his last day in July.

The below video is Greens Senator David Shoebridge asking Inspector of the NACC Gail Furness SC questions at the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Legislation Committee senate estimates hearing on Tuesday night (26/5/26).

I published an article on the 10th of May 2026 titled “Labor throw NACC Commissioner Paul Brereton under a bus – Will he resign or be sacked?” which is still relevant, you just have to add a third corruption investigation to the article, and then it’s up to date.

Below are the reasons Paul Brereton gave for resigning in the statement he issued on Monday (25/5/26):

““The ongoing focus on matters relating to me personally rather than the Commission’s work is drawing attention away from the Commission’s core purpose of strengthening integrity in the Commonwealth public sector, which has always been my primary focus as Commissioner.

“I believe that the Commission’s success is paramount, and not due to any single person. While I will continue to resist any suggestion of impropriety, I have decided that it is time, now that the Commission is established and functioning with quality staff and good processes, to step aside and allow a new Commissioner to lead it into the next phase of its development into a key and respected component of the integrity architecture of the Commonwealth.” (Click here to read the full statement)

Paul Brereton did not mention the 2 current corruption investigations he is facing in his resignation statement.

If the government allows NACC Commissioner Paul Brereton to slink away into retirement without being held accountable for all 3 corruption investigations into his crimes, then it will damage the NACC and government even more than what it has done.

While the 3-year-old NACC has failed to hold corrupt government officials to account, it has had an unintended consequence of shining a light on just how corrupt politicians are in the Labor Party and Liberal Party.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese promised the Australian public a National Anti-Corruption Commission if he won the 2022 federal election, which he did win.

But Albanese lied to the Australian public, and he did a deal with Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton to set up a fake NACC, even though Albanese didn’t need Dutton’s support to pass the NACC legislation.

At a time when Albanese and the Labor Party should be able to cash in on all the goodwill and credibility they built up with voters by setting up the NACC to make the changes they want with tax and the NDIS etc, they have found they have very little goodwill and credibility with voters. Because the voters know Albanese and Labor lied about the NACC, and it’s a dud.

With NACC Commissioner Paul Brereton resigning and Deputy NACC Commissioner Nicole Rose also resigning a few weeks ago, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will be trying to appoint another couple of corrupt patsies as Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, but the whole country is awake to them now and it’ll be a lot harder this time.

Since then, 175 wonderful people have stepped up and become monthly supporters. That’s huge, thank you!

We’re now at 25 to go.

If you’ve been enjoying the work and aren’t yet supporting monthly, I’d be incredibly grateful if you’d consider joining them. Here’s the situation:

Like most independent journalists, I’m basically a one-person small business. Right now, a lot of us are feeling the squeeze, just like many small businesses and households are. To stay afloat and keep bringing you the reporting I do, I need roughly 200 more people chipping in whatever they can comfortably afford each month.

Anything from $3 to $100 (or whatever works for your budget) makes a real difference. There’s no lock-in, you can cancel or adjust anytime.

  1. I said when this first started back in 2022 this would come back and bite them on the ass 🤣🤣

  2. From the start the NACC, a judicial body we were all expecting to root out bad eggs, has been a dismal failure. Ask the Greens who they would appoint for both positions. We might then get personnel who earn their wage.

  3. With Brereton shown to be corrupt i would think all his work on the “Brereton Report” into war crimes needs to be investigated to see why high ranking officers were not found to be involved or have knowledge of supposed war crimes leaving the lower ranks cop all the blame.

  4. Labor Senator Don Farrell, speaking about the NACC a few months ago on ABC Radio National mornings said the NACC has found no corruption.
So there is no corruption in Australian politics, he said.
The ALP is the Alternate Liberal Party.
