Federal MPs, known as Community Independents or Teals, Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender, announced their new political party, “Community Strong Australia,” on Thursday (25/6/26).
It is worth looking at by itself and because it has possibly set a template for disaffected Liberal and National Party MPs to set up their own new political party.
Since the 2025 federal election, the speed Australia is moving away from the 2-party system, or Duopoly and/or Uniparty as many call it, has increased, and as that speed increases, more political parties will be formed and have candidates elected to parliament.

The SMH reported (25/6/26):
Community Strong will seek to exploit Australia’s political upheaval, as well as circumvent new donations laws that disadvantage independents, to establish a new stronghold in the Senate.
But the leaderless party, which is not currently taking funding from Climate 200, is a high-risk strategy, as all other teal MPs have declined to join.
“This is a centrist party, not a centre-right replacement,” Steggall told this masthead. “It is not a life raft for the Liberal Party. They have done their own damage to their own movement.”
Spender said she had consulted her community and donor base before joining the party. (Click here to read more)
Zali Steggall, who is a former barrister and has been in parliament since 2019, has a higher profile than Allegra Spender, who has been in parliament since 2022.
Zali Steggall also seems to be more active in parliament, and in the below video, she “introduces her Truth in Political Advertising Private Member’s Bill,” which would be a big winner with voters around the country.
In the video, Zali Steggall starts off: “The major parties refuse to act. For too long they have used the lack of political advertising regulation to mislead and deceive voters.” Never has a truer word been spoken.
Both Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender were voted in as independent candidates in Sydney, and there is a view that at least some, if not many, of their supporters won’t be happy with them forming a political party.
I posted polls to gauge voter reaction on Thursday (25/6/26) on social media sites “X” and Threads. Below is a screenshot of the poll on “X”, although it still has a day of voting to go. It has 207 votes.
And below is the poll on Threads with 63 votes:
There are 2 major reasons given for forming the new party. One is because the election funding laws passed by the government restrict the amount of money independents can spend on elections, and secondly, to win seats in the Senate to increase political influence.
If the political landscape were the same now as it was at the May 2025 federal election, I would say that that both Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender might be in trouble at the 2028 federal election.
The reason being they took their seats from Liberals, and they have now deserted being an independent which they were voted in as.
But the political landscape has changed greatly since the May 2025 federal election with the Liberal Party vote tanking from the low 30 percent to around 20 percent, and it is likely that both Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender have increased their support in their electorates.
What the polls above suggest to me is that the new political party will have a chance to win Senate seats, at least in NSW, where there are 4 Community Independents (Teals) in the federal parliament and many more who will run for seats at the 2028 federal election.
I think it is likely that most Community Independents (Teals) will support the Community Strong Australia Senate candidates, even if they are not in the party themselves, given Community Strong Australia was started by 2 Teals.
There are a lot of questions about how Community Strong Australia will and won’t work and who will run the party etc. Until all those questions are answered, it is hard to have any strong opinion about whether or not the party will succeed.
One impact Community Strong Australia will have on Australian politics is for certain.
Liberal Party and National Party federal MPs and Senators will be thinking that if 2 Teals can set up a new political party, then there is nothing stopping 2 or more of them from setting up a new political party so they don’t go down with the Liberal/National Party ship that just hit an iceberg.
Win, lose, or draw, Zali Steggall and Allegra Spender have started the ball rolling with a new political party of current federal politicians, and it won’t be long before we have more, which is a good thing for Australian democracy.

Uhm ….. Back in the noughties there were seven (7) Independent MPs in the NSW Parliament, now there are ten (10) Independent MPs. Northern Tablelands was represented by Richard Torbay, described by Premier Bob Carr as telling Parliament ”where Northern Tablelands is on the map”.
The reason is simple; voters are fed up with being taken for granted by the city-based unelected political hacks who control pre-selection and distribute Ministries for the benefit of multinational mining corporations.
Presently, three (3) Independent MPs represent each of Sydney Basin and regional electorates, 4/8 electorates west of the Range have Independent MPs working hard for their communities, unlike their predecessor incumbents.
The recent PHONeys feral election win over a well qualified credible local Independent Michelle Milthorpe, also reflects this electoral disgust at the Macquarie Street Parliament thinking that ”NSW” means ”Newcastle Sydney Wollongong”. NSW city politicians dare not venture over any of the Hawkesbury, Nepean or Tom Uglies bridges for fear of being eaten by Bunyips lurking in the dark polluted waters or Drop Bears dangling from the mangroves.
About 35% of NSW residents choose to live in the clean air, wide open spaces, and relaxed life style of regional population centres. Now it is time for the various NSW governments to fund public infrastructure projects in regional locations.
For example,
1) renovate & reopen the Great North Railway (GNR) between Armidale and Jennings Wallangarra in time to move international tourists to the Brisbane Games, rather than waste $25 BILLION on renovating the M! Bankstown Line to suit a foreign built passenger train service requiring lowering the overhead power line to suit the train;
2) build a 2×2 road tunnel through the Blue Mountains to remove heavy freight vehicles from the Great Western Highway arguably the most dangerous road in NSW, and a better investment than the $25 BILLION spent creating the Rozelle rolling carpark, complete with traffic disorganising traffic lights for the benefit of a COALition donor consortium of bankers;
3) utilise the New England REZ to solar power the renovated GNR and allow local councils to offer free or cheap electrical power to encourage manufacturing to de-centralise out of Sydney and into northern population centres.
These above situations are state responsibilities and there are other feral responsibilities that the overpaid government desk jockeys sheltering from reality under the Canberra bubble need to attend to very quickly if the LABOR government wants to win the third (and fourth) terms that it so richly deserves.
I don’t know if they’ll be a success or not but I’m happy for them to take a few votes away from the Liberals, Labor and One Nation, because I’d prefer these three to have less power, not more. However, I tend to think this new party might be more conservative than progressive, without being the nutbags of the LNP and ON.
Maybe they could bring back Kylea Tink and Zoe Daniel for the senate in NSW and Vic respectively – if they are interested!
Unfortunately the imbeciles of Goldstein still voted in Timmy Titflops – even after his performance at the ANZAC dawn service – where he got in a physical altercation with one of Daniel’s assistants and snatched the wreath from them to lay it himself because undiagnosed and untreated, he believed it was his right. As a 101 narcissist he had to hijack an event that was about honoring those that gave their lives for their country, and somehow make it all about HIMSELF. And then REPEATEDLY lied about it even in the face of hundreds of witnesses. He is vile, it was insulting and outrageous, then the public further insulted her at the voting booth. You get exactly what you ask for so I hope they enjoy being represented by self serving sociopathic trash. I don’t blame her if she’s not interested in devoting any more time to public service when this sort of garbage is defended and then celebrated.
Two independent politicians walk into a bar.
They go up to the bartender and say:
“We want to order a drink, but we absolutely refuse to support the Big Beer monopoly. We are strictly independent drinkers!”
The bartender looks at them and says:
“Alright, what can I get you?
“The independents lean in and whisper:
“Give us a six-pack of XXXX, but put it in a cardboard box and write:
‘Community Craft Beer’ on the front in green text.”
Look at the number of times they have supported the Liberals
I recall at least one of them being not much in favor of overdue reforms to superannuation and most of them in the main being Tory lite overall
This is not a very strong name – it needs more thought.
Disgruntled members from other parties all coming together? Already a sign of self implosion. Pauline is making the same mistake.
