Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp used small time crook Ofir Birenbaum in February 2025, trying to generate a false antisemitism incident in Sydney. Birenbaum has now been found by a federal judge, along with his lawyer Rebekah Giles, to have lied and deceived the public, claiming to have had a defamation win related to the incident when he hadn’t.
The bigger story here is probably Birenbaum’s lawyer, Rebekah Giles, because she has form on the board for lying and deceiving about the true state of the law, and she now seems to be the go-to girl for the Israel Lobby given she has been representing 9 members from the Lawyers for Israel WhatsApp group.
Declaration: I should also declare upfront that Rebekah Giles’ law firm Giles George is the firm that has been sending frivolous and vexatious defamation threats to Google and YouTube regarding my reporting on Kevin Rudd and his links to Jeffrey Epstein and Rupert Murdoch.
But let’s deal with Ofir Birenbaum and his story first, and then we’ll have a closer look at Rebekah Giles.
Ofir Birenbaum – News Corp’s “Undercover Jew”
In February 2025, Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch’s News Corp sent a journalist and Ofir Birenbaum, who claims to be Jewish, to Cairo Takeaway in Sydney to incite trouble so News Corp could run stories about Australia having an antisemitism problem.
The plan was simple. Ofir Birenbaum went into the Cairo Takeaway wearing a cap and a pendant with the Star of David on them with a News Corp crew from Sydney’s The Daily Telegraph waiting outside to record any incident.
Crikey reported on Friday (14/2/25)
A News Corp operation sending an “undercover Jewish man” to a popular Egyptian cafe this week backfired when staff called the police following an altercation with Daily Telegraph journalists.
Internal files seen by Crikey show the outlet planned to use covert video-recording eyewear in the making of the story, which it internally named “UNDERCOVERJEW” and sketched out a week in advance.
Earlier this week, the head chef at Cairo Takeaway in Newtown, Sydney, posted footage to social media of an argument between Cairo staff and a News Corp journalist, videographer and the undercover individual after they had left the cafe.
Notes made in The Daily Telegraph’s internal planning system give insight into how journalists planned the story. They detail an aim of reporting “what it’s like being Jewish in Sydney”, secretly filming with video glasses, and identify the undercover Jewish man as Ofir Birenbaum — an individual described as a “friend” by fringe group the Australian Jewish Association (AJA). The system notes also outline The Daily Telegraph’s intention to send Birenbaum into various neighbourhoods to film people’s reactions. (Click here to read more)
The scam backfired, and Ofir Birenbaum and News Corp were humiliated globally in the media.
In August 2025 “Ofir Birenbaum filed a defamation claim in the Federal Court of Australia against Cairo Takeaway, owner Hesham El Masry and staff member Talaat Yehia, on Tuesday the 5th of August 2025, over Instagram posts in February 2025 about the incident.”
If the defamation claim had gone to hearing, it would have dragged in News Corp’s management and journalists, as they are the ones who organised the “Undercover Jew” media sting, which is proven by leaked News Corp computer files. (Click here to read more)
In November 2025 I published an article titled “Rupert Murdoch versus Cairo Takeaway heats up in the Federal Court” which starts off:
The stakes for Rupert Murdoch have gone up a few notches in the defamation case instituted by his puppet Ofir Birenbaum, known as the “Undercover Jew”, against Cairo Takeaway who have now countersued for trespass.
Murdoch’s News Corp, management and journalists were always going to be key witnesses as they organised the “Undercover Jew” media sting, and while News Corp isn’t being sued, any judgment against Ofir Birenbaum for trespass could have serious ramifications for Murdoch’s News Corp. In March 2026 Cairo Takeaway and Ofir Birenbaum settled the defamation case with a confidential agreement before trial, and they agreed to a joint statement.
Ofir Birenbaum and his lawyer Rebekah Giles also put out separate statements that were full of lies and implied he had won and been paid a financial settlement, which was untrue.
Cairo Takeaway took legal action against Ofir Birenbaum’s and Rebekah Giles’ false statements, and on Tuesday (30/6/26) Justice Robert Bromwich published his judgment.
The Guardian reported (30/6/26):
A pro-Israel activist breached parts of a legal settlement with Sydney restaurant Cairo Takeaway when Ofir Birenbaum and his lawyer released “highly misleading and even deceptive” statements that implied they had won, a court has ruled.
Justice Robert Bromwich handed down his decision in the federal court on Tuesday after the Middle Eastern restaurant in Newtown alleged Birenbaum had breached part of a confidential settlement in a defamation suit.
Bromwich wrote that the settlement was “a true compromise”, which included requiring the parties to release a joint statement that conveyed “no party had won”.
However, Birenbaum and his lawyer, Rebekah Giles, released personal statements on the same day as the joint statement which painted “a similar picture of victory”, the judge said.
“Those statements as reported upon were in a general sense highly misleading and even deceptive,” he wrote. (Click here to read more)
Paragraph 69 of the judgment outlines the key lies told by Ofir Birenbaum and Rebekah Giles:
69. By contrast, and contrary to the entire tenor of the Joint Statement, and in particular its conciliatory tone, key parts of both the Birenbaum Statement (published in different places, as detailed above) and the Giles Statement are nothing short of a claim of capitulation rather than compromise. Mr Birenbaum uses language such “the Truth wins”, asserts that he has been “completely vindicated”, and points to “lies” being told about him that are the subject of an unreserved public apology. None of that is reflective of the content or tenor of the Joint Statement even upon the most cursory reading, let alone when it is read carefully and properly understood. The Giles Statement paints a similar picture of victory. It portrays the resolution as “an important win” for Mr Birenbaum and a “vindication for Jews across the globe” and suggests that “a lesser man would have cut his losses and walked away”, but that Mr Birenbaum “took on the risk associated with this litigation and prevailed”. It also refers to “lies” being made by “the guilty parties”, referring to all the respondents, not just Cairo Takeaway. (Click here to read the full judgment)
Ofir Birenbaum’s and Rebekah Giles’ dishonest statements were given to Murdoch’s Sky News hosts Sharri Markson and Caroline Marcus to broadcast.
Ofir Birenbaum’s reputation has been shot to pieces by his own lies. To come to a settlement with Cairo Takeaway and then lie publicly about it shows how dishonest he is.
Rebekah Giles said in her false statement it was a “vindication for Jews across the globe.”
The reality is it has become an embarrassment for all Jews because what Ofir Birenbaum and she did was to put Judaism at the centre of their lies and deception.
Lawyer Rebekah Giles
For Rebekah Giles to negotiate a settlement between her client Ofir Birenbaum and Cairo Takeaway and then lie publicly about it trying to make it out Ofir Birenbaum and she had a big win should be investigated by the NSW Law Society and/or the Office of the NSW Legal Services Commissioner.
In a different matter in July 2025 Rebekah Giles also lied and deceived about the true state of the law, trying to have the SMH block articles and names for 9 female members of the Lawyers for Israel WhatsApp group. Giles then tried to have journalists and other SMH staff charged with contempt of court, which was frivolous and vexatious.
One positive is Rebekah Giles’ actions have helped expose how parts of the Israel Lobby work.

So the Judge decided Birenbaum and Giles lied. No penalty? It seems that lies, deceit and scams are the modus operandi of certain warped people in our society and their lawyers and it’s oh so satisfying when they get hoist by their own petard. But I’d still like to see actual penalties.
Perhaps it is time for Rebekah Giles to be referred to the NSW Law Society Ethics Committee to answer for her unprofessional activities in this matter, and possibly other matters, that would bring the legal profession into disrepute.
Sadly, it is unlikely that providing representation for the AJA as a ”terrorist organisation” is a reviewable matter.
